SamanthaM5 Stars Out Of 5December 20, 2013SamanthaMLet me preface my review by saying I am a huge Dave Ramsey fan. If you know me well, you know I'm all about numbers, budgeting, saving, etc. I have listened to his radio show for years. Love Dave Ramsey's plan! I have already read The Total Money Makeover, but when I saw it up for review, it was a good time for a refresher. Dave's plan is really idiot proof. If you don't know anything about budgeting and need a place to start, get this book. Follow his plan. You will see results. It's a slow process, but stick with it. There have been times when I have tried to do things out of order of the baby steps, and boy, I have seen the repercussions. I have an accounting degree, but Dave makes this so simple anyone can do it. It is the book I probably recommend most to people. I have given people copies of it. I just cannot say enough good things about this book. I think my favorite quote of his is "If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else." My husband questions me sometimes when I throw a big snowball at our debt, and we are not out enjoying something frivolous. But I just reply, you'll thank me later.
I received a free copy of the ebook for review from Thomas Nelson's Booksneeze program. The opinions expressed are my own.
Monica HAtlantaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Solid Financial AdviceDecember 10, 2013Monica HAtlantaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I recently finished reading The Total Money Makeover: Classic Edition by Dave Ramsey. Ramsey is a well-known financial expert and also has a popular radio show. In this book, he outlines the foundations for financial fitness. Common money myths are dispelled and he includes plenty of anecdotal real life stories from people who have made drastic, positive changes through use of his methods.
I know who Dave Ramsey is and the basic tenets of his advice - no debt outside a mortgage, not using credit, utilizing a debt snowball to eliminate debt - but was not overly familiar with his methodology. I feel it's important to point out that I am not part of Ramsey's targeted audience for this book. My family is fortunate to not be in debt and we follow a written budget (another thing Ramsey recommends). However, we have many years until retirement - so I was curious to read this book and see how we could improve upon what we are already doing.
With the caveat that I am not the book's targeted audience - I was a bit disappointed by what I read. I was hoping to learn more about Ramsey's methods and how to apply them. Instead, this book largely focuses on helping people understand many common money myths and why they are myths. I would say that this book provides a foundation for financial fitness rather than the blueprint for actually doing it. (I read a few reviews after reading the book, and it sounds like Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace may provide more of the budget blueprint I was hoping to review in The Total Money Makeover.)
Just because the book was a bit disappointing to me does not mean that it is a disappointing book. In fact, I think it is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it for someone who is looking to make positive financial change. Ramsey does an excellent job outlining basic principles in clear, no-nonsense language. I would even go so far as to say that this book should be required reading for teens.
I received a free copy of this book from BookSneeze in exchange for an honest review.
The Happy ReaderColumbia, TNAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Easy to ApplyNovember 24, 2013The Happy ReaderColumbia, TNAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I've always been a firm believer that God is the One truly in control of our lives and that whatever happens, good or bad, we can learn from it and help others learn from our own experiences. Only, it seems that people are only willing to listen if what we've been through is particularly bad, whether it be abuse, alcohol, or as in this case, financial. Curse this sick part of humanity, but it's called negative reinforcement. Sometimes-most times-we must hurt before we will learn an important lesson.
This is the driving force behind Mr. Ramsey's book. Taking what he learned when he toppled and fell off the financial pedestal, he offers readers a new perspective on something that affects every one of our lives. Money.
I don't listen to his radio show. I have never been a 'follower' of his system (because I didn't really know what it was), but, being on one income with two children, I have always been frugally minded. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. What began as an experiment to see exactly where our money was going and how we could do things better, has now grown into a new way of living, spending, and saving. We are/were not in a terribly bad financial situation as most of the people in this book were/are, but if there's a way we can better use our money? Yeah. I'm going to use it.
I definitely learned a lot from this book and have begun to apply the easy principles behind it.
Courtney5 Stars Out Of 5Life-changingNovember 14, 2013CourtneyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Dave Ramsey's The Total Money Makeover is as life-changing as people say. I agreed to review this book and thought that I would read it, but that it wouldn't change the way I use my money. I thought that my husband and I had a pretty solid budget before reading this book. We [both currently PhD students] do not have a whole lot of wiggle room when it comes to finances. We eagerly awaited payday, but we made it every month without too many sacrifices. I thought we were fine. Boy, was I wrong.
When I read Dave's book, we suddenly were able to pay triple the amount to our monthly credit card bills; we started making a plan to pay off my student loans while in graduate school; we even started *saving* money (gasp!). WHAT HAPPENED? All of it came down to a change in perspective. Dave makes you see where your money is currently going and understand where it should be going. We had a huge change in perspective when we started understanding how much money we were wasting on things we didn't even need! This book has been life-changing... literally.
I never read the original edition, but I'm told that the difference from the latest addition is the stories from people who have followed Dave's plan and now have financial freedom. I really enjoyed reading these stories and find encouragement in the fact that other people have done this, too, and experienced success. Following Dave's plan does "limit" your spending, in a sense, but does so in a way that helps you out financially in the long run. I definitely recommend getting your hands on a copy ASAP.

I like the advice that Dave gives to eliminate debt. It's actually following through that is difficult. This method has worked for many people and he has some great advice. Sometimes he can come off a little harsh but it's good advice. I would recommend this book to others.
