Structured around "Essential Questions," the Student Textbook guides students towards exploring concepts and building knowledge that transfers over into their real world; these "essential questions" are also reinforced through the Essential Questions Journal. Twenty-five chapters are divided into three to five lessons, with each lesson taking one to two days to complete. Chapters begin with the Essential Question that captures the main idea of the chapter and promotes inquiries and stimulates thinking skills; lessons also contain a "guiding question," new words, objectives, graphic organizers, and plenty of photographs alongside the clearly-written text. A review and assessment at the end of each chapter allow for opportunities to measure growth and retention of knowledge. Special features are integrated throughout the text, and focus on current-day issues, citizenship, landmark Supreme Court decisions, Constitutional connections, and government processes; additional infographics and diagrams to help make concepts clear throughout. 864 pages with index and glossary, hardcover.
The Essential Questions Journal will help students to better understand the text through reinforcing questions and activities. The Unit Essential Question is repeated at the beginning of the unit page, and warm-up exercises help to bring out new ideas by tapping into what students already know while encouraging them to branch out in their thinking. Additional activities direct students to gather new information, synthesize it, and draw conclusions, while expanding their thinking and integrating their own opinions. The "essay" exercises begin with quotations, and require students to integrate their own thoughts, guiding questions from the textbook, and journal activities. Additional essay warm-up exercises will help students prepare their thoughts and arguments before they write a final essay. 220 non-reproducible, perforated pages, softcover.
The Essential Questions Journal Answer Key provides line-listed answers to the journal. 52 pages, booklet, three-hole-punched.
The Teacher's Guide includes a number of helpful chapters that address how to teach government, organize and schedule the program, differentiate instruction, assess students, and plan how to teach each section in each chapter. The "planning" chapter clearly lists the unit essential question, as well as each section's guiding question, an aligned summary of teaching strategies, differentiated resources, tests, quizzes, worksheets, and student objectives. Reduced-size student pages are surrounded by teaching notes in the margins. Teaching notes include lesson goals, things to do before class, developing skills, basic facts, lesson instructions with questions and board-work, and answers. 864 pages, hardcover, with index and glossary.
Homeschoolers, please note: The teacher's guide and student text refer to online components of this course. This kit does not include access to those sites, and they are currently only available for institutional schools.
