National Bestseller--New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Publisher's Weekly

Are you ready to see your fixer upper?

These famous words are now synonymous with the dynamic husband-and-wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. As this question fills the airwaves with anticipation, their legions of fans continue to multiply and ask a different series of questions, like—Who are these people? What’s the secret to their success? And is Chip actually that funny in real life? By renovating homes in Waco, Texas, and changing lives in such a winsome and engaging way, Chip and Joanna have become more than just the stars of Fixer Upper, they have become America’s new best friends.

The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna, offering their fans a detailed look at their life together. From the very first renovation project they ever tackled together, to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today.

They both attended Baylor University in Waco. However, their paths did not cross until Chip checked his car into the local Firestone tire shop where Joanna worked behind the counter. Even back then Chip was a serial entrepreneur who, among other things, ran a lawn care company, sold fireworks, and flipped houses. Soon they were married and living in their first fixer upper. Four children and countless renovations later, Joanna garners the attention of a television producer who notices her work on a blog one day.

In The Magnolia Story fans will finally get to join the Gaines behind the scenes and discover:

  • The time Chip ran to the grocery store and forgot to take their new, sleeping baby
  • Joanna’s agonizing decision to close her dream business to focus on raising their children
  • When Chip buys a houseboat, sight-unseen, and it turns out to be a leaky wreck
  • Joanna’s breakthrough moment of discovering the secret to creating a beautiful home
  • Harrowing stories of the financial ups and downs as an entrepreneurial couple
  • Memories and photos from Chip and Jo’s wedding
  • The significance of the word magnolia and why it permeates everything they do
  • The way the couple pays the popularity of Fixer Upper forward, sharing the success with others, and bolstering the city of Waco along the way

And yet there is still one lingering question for fans of the show: Is Chip really that funny? "Oh yeah," says Joanna. "He was, and still is, my first fixer upper."

Author Info

Joanna Stevens Gaines is co-owner, co-founder and lead designer of Magnolia Homes, and co-stars in HGTV's Fixer Upper with her husband Chip. She appreciates the old ways of living, simple and hard-working with home at the center.

Joanna was born in Kansas and raised in the Lone Star State. She graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Communications and was inspired to join the world of design while interning in New York. Off-the-beaten-path boutiques felt like home in the midst of the big city. These shops were the influence for what came next. Joanna decided to open her own shop in 2003, bringing her NYC-inspired ideas and eye for design back to her roots-Waco, Texas. She soon discovered this emerging passion complemented Chip's experience, and together they began remodeling and flipping homes. Joanna self identifies as a driver, and takes pride in her work. But she also loves to have fun with Chip and appreciates his hilarious antics.

Joanna's design preference is simple, fresh and timeless. She loves the use of industrial pieces that are a glimpse of how life used to be. Her specialty is making old things new and seeing the potential in every project-no matter how hopeless it may seem in the beginning. By preserving and highlighting the character of each home, Joanna keeps things original and one of a kind. Her passion is to create functional rooms that inspire and encourage others to own their space.

In between filming for Fixer Upper, their many renovation projects, and running Magnolia, Joanna enjoys life on the farm and spending time cooking family recipes in her kitchen. Gardening soothes her soul and being with her four kids dominates all other favorites.

Chip Carter Gaines is co-owner and co-founder of Magnolia Homes, and co-stars in HGTV's Fixer Upper with his wife Joanna.

Chip was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in Dallas. He graduated from Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business with a Marketing degree. An entrepreneur by nature, Chip has started more successful small businesses than you could count on both hands, including Green and Gold Wash and Fold, a local Waco laundry service geared toward college students, a fireworks stand and multiple landscaping companies. If you've thought about it, Chip's probably tried it. Having grown up spending time on his granddad's ranch in North Texas, Chip became a true cowboy at heart. He was made for hard labor and always preferred digging ditches to academic pursuits.

Chip manages the construction and realty side of Magnolia. He has 15 years of experience in the field and has remodeled hundreds of homes in the Waco-area. His design preference is "whatever Joanna likes," and he always comes up with a "creative solution" that saves the day and helps Joanna make the impossible possible. To say he adds comic relief to the team would be an understatement; he keeps us rolling, but also on our toes.

Chip loves life with his four kiddos and is head over heels for Joanna. Hand in hand is exactly how Chip prefers to work, which makes Fixer Upper even more fun to watch, and he enjoys seeing his and Joanna's passions merge to compliment and serve each other.

    Last week, I finally read The Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines. I know. All of you probably read it months ago, when it came out! What took me so long?? {My sister received it as a Christmas gift and kindly shared it with me so I could read it, too!}

In case you haven't read the book yet, here are my thoughts. I had heard great things about it, and of course I'm quite a fan of Fixer Upper, so I figured I would love the book. But even so, I was a little nervous. If there's one thing I learned in radio, it's that not all people are good authors. Being a good speaker doesn't mean you're a good writer (and vice versa!). Having a big life event befall you doesn't mean you're a good writer. Of course there are writers who come alongside to help with some of those things, and Chip and Joanna had a good one: Mark Dagostino.

If you watch Fixer Upper, I'm happy to tell you that one thing you'll notice if you read this book is the distinct voices of both Chip and Joanna shining through. Most of the book is written from Joanna's perspective, but several chunks are written from Chip's and just as you see on TV, some parts are written almost conversationally, with the two of them bantering back and forth with their thoughts. To help you keep track of who is speaking, each has a different font. (I didn't find this distracting at all. I actually mentally read each part in their respective voices.)

Another thing that makes me nervous when I pick up stories written by well-known people is the predictable back-story. They all go back and relive their childhood, and in some books, that part gets tedious. I almost thought that would be missing altogether from this book, but it did eventually surface, although much later than I'm used to. But in this book, it didn't bother me. It was interesting to see how their upbringing and their parents' stories impacted the people they became.

I also found it very interesting to read stories of their dating years, early marriage, and how they found this beautiful rhythm of working well together that we've come to love from watching them on TV. (And they tell how they "got discovered," part of which I hadn't heard before.)

There are several hilarious stories in there (which, as you might guess, mostly revolve around Chip's antics and misadventures). I stopped several times to read large sections out loud to my husband and he loved them. There are also a lot of faith lessons sprinkled throughout and a clear explanation of how they've seen God at work in their marriage and business life.

Just as I hoped, I found it an endearing, enjoyable, and easy read. (OOH! And there are pictures in the middle. I love books with pictures in the middle!) I'm glad they shared the back story. Fun to know!

My favorite show is, "Fixer Upper" so I had to buy the book to read about where they started in life and about their commitment to each other and their faith. The book is well written and tells the story behind the scene of their TV show, faith first and family second. It's refreshing to read a book that tells not only their success but also the hardships they have gone through.

If you know who Chip and Joanna Gaines are, then you have to read or listen to this book! They both read the audiobook and it's so real - so them!

Their story is amazing! If I liked them before I love them now. Through all the years, the ups and the downs, they have trusted God and He has been their guide. Joanna is the level-headed organized planner and Chip is the fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants impulsive business man, salesman, builder, whatever. The two of them together make it work, but it's a marvel that their marriage works and their business together works. Pink and blue really do make purple.

They are talented and smart and industrious and very hard workers. They are loving parents to four children besides all they do with their shop, their home building, renovating, and flipping houses. It's amazing! And ironically as much as we all know them from their television show, they don't own a t.v.

This book is delightful and challenging. Go get it today - you will not be disappointed! (The center of the hardcover book has family photos through the years, and the end of the audiobook includes some live audio from a production meeting).

This was a delightful read and it answered many questions in my mind about who this lovely couple from HGTV's "Fixer Upper" really is behind the scenes. It was wonderful to see how God was, and is, working in their lives. They are a shining example of where faith, love, and hard work can take you. An inspirational and motivational read!
