Are you ready to see your fixer upper?
These famous words are now synonymous with the dynamic husband-and-wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTVs Fixer Upper. As this question fills the airwaves with anticipation, their legions of fans continue to multiply and ask a different series of questions, likeWho are these people?Whats the secret to their success? And is Chip actually that funny in real life? By renovating homes in Waco, Texas, and changing lives in such a winsome and engaging way, Chip and Joanna have become more than just the stars of Fixer Upper, they have become Americas new best friends.
The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna, offering their fans a detailed look at their life together. From the very first renovation project they ever tackled together, to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today.
They both attended Baylor University in Waco. However, their paths did not cross until Chip checked his car into the local Firestone tire shop where Joanna worked behind the counter. Even back then Chip was a serial entrepreneur who, among other things, ran a lawn care company, sold fireworks, and flipped houses. Soon they were married and living in their first fixer upper. Four children and countless renovations later, Joanna garners the attention of a television producer who notices her work on a blog one day.
In The Magnolia Story fans will finally get to join the Gaines behind the scenes and discover:
- The time Chip ran to the grocery store and forgot to take their new, sleeping baby
- Joannas agonizing decision to close her dream business to focus on raising their children
- When Chip buys a houseboat, sight-unseen, and it turns out to be a leaky wreck
- Joannas breakthrough moment of discovering the secret to creating a beautiful home
- Harrowing stories of the financial ups and downs as an entrepreneurial couple
- Memories and photos from Chip and Jos wedding
- The significance of the word magnolia and why it permeates everything they do
- The way the couple pays the popularity of Fixer Upper forward, sharing the success with others, and bolstering the city of Waco along the way
And yet there is still one lingering question for fans of the show: Is Chip really that funny? "Oh yeah," says Joanna. "He was, and still is, my first fixer upper."
Chip Gaines and his wife, Joanna Gaines, are co-founders and co-owners of Magnolia Homes, Magnolia Market, and Magnolia Realty in Waco, Texas.
Chip was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was raised in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. He graduated from Baylor Universitys Hankamer School of Business with a degree in marketing. An entrepreneur by nature, he started and sold many small businesses before Magnolia. Having grown up spending time on his granddads ranch in North Texas, Chip became a true cowboy at heart. He says he was made for hard labor and always preferred digging ditches to academic pursuits.
Chip loves life with his five kiddos and is head over heels for Joanna. Hand in hand is exactly how Chip prefers to work, which makes Fixer Upper even more fun to watch, and he enjoys seeing his and Joannas passions merge to complement and serve one another.
Joanna Stevens Gaines is co-owner, co-founder and lead designer of Magnolia Homes, and co-stars in HGTV's Fixer Upper with her husband Chip. She appreciates the old ways of living, simple and hard-working with home at the center.
Joanna was born in Kansas and raised in the Lone Star State. She graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Communications and was inspired to join the world of design while interning in New York. Off-the-beaten-path boutiques felt like home in the midst of the big city. These shops were the influence for what came next. Joanna decided to open her own shop in 2003, bringing her NYC-inspired ideas and eye for design back to her roots-Waco, Texas. She soon discovered this emerging passion complemented Chip's experience, and together they began remodeling and flipping homes. Joanna self identifies as a driver, and takes pride in her work. But she also loves to have fun with Chip and appreciates his hilarious antics.
Joanna's design preference is simple, fresh and timeless. She loves the use of industrial pieces that are a glimpse of how life used to be. Her specialty is making old things new and seeing the potential in every project-no matter how hopeless it may seem in the beginning. By preserving and highlighting the character of each home, Joanna keeps things original and one of a kind. Her passion is to create functional rooms that inspire and encourage others to own their space.
In between filming for Fixer Upper, their many renovation projects, and running Magnolia, Joanna enjoys life on the farm and spending time cooking family recipes in her kitchen. Gardening soothes her soul and being with her four kids dominates all other favorites.
Chip Carter Gaines is co-owner and co-founder of Magnolia Homes, and co-stars in HGTV's Fixer Upper with his wife Joanna.
Chip was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in Dallas. He graduated from Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business with a Marketing degree. An entrepreneur by nature, Chip has started more successful small businesses than you could count on both hands, including Green and Gold Wash and Fold, a local Waco laundry service geared toward college students, a fireworks stand and multiple landscaping companies. If you've thought about it, Chip's probably tried it. Having grown up spending time on his granddad's ranch in North Texas, Chip became a true cowboy at heart. He was made for hard labor and always preferred digging ditches to academic pursuits.
Chip manages the construction and realty side of Magnolia. He has 15 years of experience in the field and has remodeled hundreds of homes in the Waco-area. His design preference is "whatever Joanna likes," and he always comes up with a "creative solution" that saves the day and helps Joanna make the impossible possible. To say he adds comic relief to the team would be an understatement; he keeps us rolling, but also on our toes.
