Editorial Reviews

In this Christmas abecedary, Bowman and McKinley use sturdy rhymed couplets, accompanied by Biblical quotes and citations, to retell the nativity story both chronologically and alphabetically. On left-hand pages framed by tidy botanical borders, Keay paints large capital letters and the people or events discussed (Joseph takes a hammer to the letter C on an early page); Bowman’s rhymes and Bible verses appear opposite (“A carpenter named Joseph/ chose Mary for his wife./ The news that Mary told him/ would soon change Joseph’s life”). Concrete, nativity-specific words (inn, manger, wise men) share space with terms (king, ruler, savior) that emphasize Jesus’ role: “Though he was just a baby,/ he was born to be a king./ Jesus will reign forever,/ and heaven and earth will sing!” Doll-like characterizations and a soft pastel palette bolster this soothing introduction to the story of Jesus’ birth.

You and your child can learn about Jesus birth in chronological order from A-Z. M is for Manger tells of the birth of Christ in rhythm and rhyme. What better way for youngsters to learn then short and to the point, easy-to-read messages. Each letter stands for a word. Each word has a short 4 line rhyme telling the Christmas story along with a scripture verse to add to the message. Read the book all in one setting or use it as a devotional the whole month of Dec., a letter a day, to look deeper into the birth of Christ. This one will be added to the church nursery. It's a keeper. One you'll want to add to your Christmas book list.

M is for Manger, written by Crystal Bowman and Teri McKinley, is a lovely hardback book, just in time for the upcoming Christmas season.

This rhyming storybook travels through the alphabet, emphasizing the significance each letter has on the Christmas Story.

Each page on the left illustrates a letter of the alphabet, a pertaining drawing, and a description:

    A is for Angel.

The pages on the right contain a poem for the corresponding letter, and a verse (NLT):

    An ANGEL said to Mary,

    You are the favored one.

Youre going to have a baby boy,

And he will be Gods Son.

The angel told her... You have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son. Luke 1:30-31, NLT

The short, rhyming phrases are rhythmic, entertaining, and scriptural. Im impressed with how thorough the book is, with biblical references for every passage.

    Bonuses:

A presentation page, for offering the book as a gift, with printed lines where you fill in who the book is to, from, and the date.

A page that guides parents on how the book can assist them in having their children focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

To put it simply, this book is adorable! The illustrations, by Claire Keay, are detailed and colorful, and the message is pure. This is a lovely gift for children, parents, grandparents, Sunday school teachers, and caregivers.

This book is going on my keeper shelf.

Anyone else excited that Christmas is on the way? I know, me too! In our house, we do Christmas big. Christmas music, baking, shopping, giving, paying it forward, Christmas movies...it's a constant state of Christmas. But most of all, we love Jesus! And in every single thing we do, we keep the real reason for it at the forefront.

M is for Manger is one of the cutest Christmas books I've saw. First of all, the book is completely adorable. And it tells the Christmas story using the alphabet! The story is told in chronological order and alphabetical order.

Each page has a letter, an adorable illustration for that letter, a short rhyme to tell that part of the story, and a Bible verse that coincides with that part of the story.

Thank you to Tyndale Publishers for a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
