This edition is intended primarily for the reader whose knowledge of late medieval Latin and sixteenth-century German is too small to permit him to work with Luther in the original languages. Those who can, will continue to read Luther in his original words as these have been assembled in the monumental Weimar edition. Its texts and helps have formed a basis for this edition, though in certain places it was constrained to depart from its readings and findings. The translators have attempted to translate Luther as he thought translating should be done. That is, they have striven for faithfulness on the basis of the best lexicographical materials available. In these particular lectures on Romans, Luther had the splendid opportunity to share with his students the great find of his life, "that place in Paul which was for me truly the gate of Paradise." These lectures are deemed as the most telling Latin writing in respect to his discovery of the true meaning of "the righteousness of God".
