Product Description

I Love You to the Stars is a beautiful book that helps children understand the often-scary reality of a grandparent or older friend experiencing dementia. It can be read with an adult, along with the discussion questions included at the end of the book, or pulled from the shelf by little hands whenever they need a reminder that love is always there.

Grandma has come to live with Noah's family, and he couldn't be happier. They put together puzzles, read books, and play with Sunny, Grandma's dog. And she never misses a chance to tell Noah that she loves him "to the stars." But lately Grandma hasn't been the same. She does funny things like lose her shoes in the bathtub, and not so funny things like getting lost and forgetting how to read. Mom explains that Grandma's brain has gotten sick, and it makes her forget things. That means it's their job to remember for her--and to make sure she always knows that she is loved as much as she loves them.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am a Christian children's author and have published more than 100 children's books in the past 25 years. I love teaching children about God, family, and friends. I am a mentor for MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) and teach at writers' conferences. I write lyrics for children's piano music and stories for Clubhouse Jr. Magazine.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Almost everyone knows someone who is affected by dementia. For young children, it is hard to understand why their relationship with someone they love has changed. This story, inspired by a true story, helps children understand that even though things have changed, the love last forever.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My hope is that this book will be a helpful resource for families who have a loved one afflicted with this disease.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I learned so much about dementia and Alzheimer's and how it affects not only the person, but an entire family. It's a sad reality that many families face, but there are ways to hold on to the good memories and show love to each other.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I love all the different kinds of children's books, from board books and picture books to devotions for kids and Bible storybooks. I love seeing the creativity of other writers.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  My purpose in writing books is to tell children that God loves them and cares about them very much.
