The books of the Apocrypha were part of the Bible until the late 1800's and their true place in scripture is not only virtually unknown to the entire Christian world, but an intellectual and spiritual subterfuge. One of the best kept theological secrets is that the Bible used by the modern Protestant Church is not the original King James Bible, only half of the original Books of the Apocrypha are in the Catholic Bible, and the Apocrypha fills a 400 year chronological gap missing from that Bible. The Real Apocrypha reveals the true history of those books and their presence throughout the historical record of the Christian church, and includes the text of those books, in their entirety. The missing translator's documents, originally in the King James Bible, and an extensive comparison of the Apocryphal books to the current scriptures in the Bible are also included.

David deSilvaAshland, OHAge: 45-54Gender: male2 Stars Out Of 5By all means read the Apocrypha, but there are better ones availableSeptember 7, 2015David deSilvaAshland, OHAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 1Meets Expectations: 4I applaud Mr. Cooke for seeking to promote the knowledge of this body of literature, to which I have also devoted a surprising portion of my career (surprising, as I'm a professor of New Testament). Nevertheless, I cannot commend an overpriced edition of the KJV Apocrypha, which is available for less than half this price. Indeed, I would heartily recommend the NRSV Apocrypha in any of its editions, since we've learned ever so much about Greek language and vocabulary in the 400 years since the translators of the KJV attempted the task (not to mention what we've learned about the original Hebrew text of Ben Sira, for example, from discoveries of Hebrew manuscripts of the same in the 19th and 20th centuries). Particularly useful is the New Oxford Annotated Apocrypha, which lists for the same price as this edition (though sells for considerably less at online bookstores), gives you a state-of-the-art translation (including other important texts like 3 & 4 Maccabees), and provides excellent introductory articles and annotations throughout every text. Or try the ESV or CEB translations, each also available for less than this (and both undertaken since 2000 -- again with state-of-the-art textual, lexical, and linguistic knowledge behind them).
