David Robert Anderson answers this question with a resounding yes. With Anderson as friend and guide, we discover that what once seemed an ending is actually a promising beginningan invitation into a more authentic, and very different, spiritual experience.
"In Losing Your Faith, Finding Your Soul, David Anderson leads the "spiritually hungry yet suspicious" pilgrim right into the heart of the transformational path. Forcefully, eloquently, and with real pastoral genius, David opens our understanding to a richer life with God beyond conventional faitha life that, paradoxically, starts at the moment old beliefs fail. He shows that "finding your soul" means awakening to a life of faith that is large enough to embrace the dynamism of human growth in all its pain and ambiguity. This superb and encouraging book meets a huge need. I recommend it wholeheartedly." - CYNTHIA BOURGEAULT, PhD, Episcopal priest, teacher, conference leader; author of The Wisdom of Jesus
"There's a bracing toughness about this Pilgrim's Progress for our time. We live in a culture where the predominant belief is that everything in principle is fixable. (No wonder many of us live lives of puzzling disappointment.) David Anderson confronts us with the great unfixables of love, death, and time. All these themes are forcefully yet gently faced in this remarkable book." - ALAN JONES, Dean Emeritus of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco; honorary Canon of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres; author of Soul-Making
"In Losing Your Faith, Finding Your Soul, David Anderson says what every thoughtful Christian has realized-faith was meant to be built upon, not enshrined. This book is a tribute to doubters, those seeking honesty, and those in search of a faith forged in failure. There are no flowers here, and no rosy promises, but truth abundant and light for the journey." -PHILIP GULLEY, author of Living the Quaker Way

I found this to be one of the most thought provoking books I've ever read. Within the chapters of this book the author takes us on a journey, one he traveled when his belief system was deeply challenged. In the process he came to see things in a much deeper and more meaningful way; this being the gift afforded the reader as each chapter is read, thought upon and pondered. Of his crisis he says "I didn't know it then, but what I thought was an end was in fact a beginning, and a promising one."
We learn the author experienced a crisis of faith in mid-life, brought about by stress and a personal crisis. Through this experience he learned that when "one understanding of our spiritual self dies, another larger one is waiting to be born". Learning to "identify and come to terms with the fear, grief and confusion that accompany a shift in our spiritual foundation" is availed to the reader in the chapters of this book.
Each chapter begins with a thought provoking quote that sets the stage for the chapters content. And the book is filled with interesting quotes and personal stories that help clarify the authors intended message. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and intend to read it again; this time doing so to even better understand the message and apply what is applicable to my life.
"I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review."
Dr JSKAge: 45-54Gender: male3 Stars Out Of 5August 13, 2013Dr JSKAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3Losing Your Faith, Finding Your Soul: A Guide To Rebirth When Old Beliefs Die, written by David Robert Anderson, is a book that strives to guide its readers through finding a way through their spiritual deficits, back into a real and powerful faith.
I will begin this review by stating a simple fact: I love to read. I am, in regards to my reading choices, a realist. I enjoy reading books that are designed to guide me into a deeper relationship with Christ over the fantasy or sci-fi publications.
That stated, this publication, for me, was a very difficult read. I found myself rereading numerous sections multiple times in an effort to rekindle my thoughts, because they seem to have become lost within the wording of paragraphs that followed.
The content/subject matter of this book is necessary within today's society, for many have lost touch with what was once a powerful faith within, but I am not sure comparing a powerful focused faith to an athlete's perception of "being in the zone" is a justifiable representation of our faith and/or relationship with God.
While I found this book lacking in keeping my attention, I am sure it has the capability to reach many who are willing to turn its pages. My recommendation is as follows: When this publication is released, go to a local bookstore, grab a cup of whatever works for you, sit down, and read a few chapters. Following that time, then decide for yourself if this is something you should purchase or place back on the shelf.
