I've read all of Lynn Austin's books, and each one is captivating. Having said that, Long Way Home is her best book to date, and I've said that about each of her last five when they came out! Long Way Home is a gripping, can't-put-it-down story from page 1. I love the way each of her characters' stories move towards one another in a suspense-filled, powerful path of redemption. I've read a lot of WW2 fiction, and this is the best by far. Her amazing research about the period and events teaches me things I never knew before. Long Way Home is not just for female readers. It's for anyone wanting to dig deeper into WW2, PTSD, true friendship, challenging faith.

This newest novel from Lynn Austin is a beautifully written WWII storyline with a different perspective than I have ever read before. The characters are all trying to find a sense of purpose in the midst of or after the war, and although they experience so many difficult elements of the repercussions of war, their storylines are also redemptive and hopeful. It is the only book I have read that covers the battle fatigue or PTSD and other mental health struggles so many people unfortunately experience, while also gracefully pointing to the Hope and light that can be found in Christ in the midst of this darkness. As always, there is a sense of mystery that kept me turning each page wanting to find out how the characters storylines all intersected, and once again, Lynn manages to tie their storylines together so beautifully in the end. As someone who loves animals and is traveling to New York State for the first time this summer, the horses, dogs, and landscape described in the story made me smile too!! I highly recommend this book!

What an amazing novel that was equally heartbreaking and inspiring. I appreciated that even though it didn't shy away from tough subject matters, the overall tone of the book wasn't too depressing or heavy, but somehow hope shone through.

I thought it was unique that the dual timelines were close together, one set during WWII and the other just afterwards but it all interconnected and unravelled perfectly. I found it fascinating learning more about the plight of Jewish refugees during the war. It was also quite shocking discovering how veterans with battle fatigue/PTSD were treated back then.

I loved the message of reconciling faith when faced with terrible evil and suffering and thought the different character's faith journeys felt authentic. I fell in love with all of the characters and felt like they had become my friends by the end of the book!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

Long Way Home, by Lynn Austin, is a profoundly moving novel. Set in Europe and the United States during and after WWII, this beautifully written dual timeline story is absolutely riveting as it tells the story of two women, the men they care about, and the devastation of war and its aftermath. With tremendous talent, Ms. Austin has crafted a gripping story that highlights human heartbreak, perseverance, resiliency, and compassion. Though filled with scenes of tragedy and despair, this novel finds an emotional balance by offering honest moments of hope and redemption bolstered by gentle reminders that healing and restoration can be successfully kindled in the presence of love, kindness, and grace

Within the pages of this book, the well-developed characters are authentic and vulnerable. Their will to fight for significance and survival is utterly compelling. Their questions, their insecurities, their fears, and their needs are certainly believable. When confronted with deep loss, cruelty, and uncertainty, their struggle is genuine and raw especially as the foundations of their faith begin to crumble. Yet, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles they display courage and determination to help one another to restore a sense of purpose, hope, and belonging.

Ms. Austin is an exceptionally talented writer and storyteller. In Long Way Home, she offers the reader a truly surprising, enriching, and profoundly memorable novel. Page after page, it is a tender and touching story of loss, love, faith, and family. As it explores relevant themes like cruelty, racism, and trauma, it also reveals the power of love, friendship, and perseverance. Every minute spent reading this book is a thoughtful, immersive, and meaningful experience. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and NetGalley. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.

Once again, Lynn Austin has written a book that captivated me, a book that stayed with me long after I read it and made me ponder historical events differently than I had before. I have read many historical fiction books set in the World War II era and this one focuses on topics and aspects of war that I have not previously considered and have not seen in other books. Many Christian historical fiction novels are basically a romance set in a historical time frame. Lynn's writing is so refreshingly different. She has complex characters, a complex plot, and accurate historical details. She puts things you read about in a history book in shoe leather as you follow the life of believable characters in a historical era.

Lynn masterfully develops each individual character in this novel. Each person has their own story and is battling through personal things that are very relatable. You find yourself connecting with each character and also learning something from each one.

As a Christian, Long Way Home helped me to wrestle through some tough questions of the faith. How could a God, who we claim is good all the time, allow the atrocities of war to happen? Even though those who were victimized prayed and asked for help, where was God in all of the suffering? Since God is all-powerful, why didn't he just step in and rescue the innocent? These real and raw questions are dealt with head on in this book. Lynn brought out things I have never pondered before and showed that we can trust that God is still good and is always working, even when we, in human terms, can make no sense of what we see.

Finally, this book brings home the fact that even when "peace" is declared by world leaders, the war is far from over in the hearts of those who fought and for their families back home. I have a profound gratitude for the Greatest Generation and for their sacrifices.

My review is my own opinion. However, in the interest of full disclosure, I was privileged to be on the launch team for this new book. I received an advance copy of this book for free in order to help spread the word about this new work from Lynn Austin. With all of that being said, it is my sincere desire that you read this book. Not only is it a good read, but it will leave you pondering big questions and will give you a deep appreciation for the sacrifices of others.
