Publisher's Description

Life is far from a breeze for Olivia Beckman, owner of Livvie’s Kitchen, a favorite of locals in Wabash, Indiana. The widowed mother of two is struggling to make ends meet—no simple feat, especially when her cook turns in his resignation. Yet she’s determined to pull through on her own, just as she did when God failed to save her beloved Frank.
Newly released from a ten-year prison sentence, Will Taylor is ready for a fresh start. With harmonica in hand—the only possession he values, aside from his Bible—he makes his way to Wabash, where a late-night meal at Livvie’s Kitchen turns into a job opportunity when the outgoing cook learns about his restaurant experience. What he doesn’t know is that the "restaurant" was a prison cafeteria.
But Will became a new man behind bars, thanks to a Christian friend, and he credits God’s providence with landing him a job he loves. Soon, he cooks and bakes his way into the stomachs of his customers—and the heart of his employer. Both are hesitant, though, still healing from past hurts. A recipe for love between them will require sharing secrets, braving dangers, and believing God for a bright future.

Author Bio

Sharlene MacLaren was born and raised in west Michigan and attended Spring Arbor University. Upon graduating in 1971 with an education degree, she taught second grade for two years, then accepted an invitation to travel internationally with a singing ensemble for one year. In 1975, she came home, returned to her teaching job, and married her childhood sweetheart. Together, they raised two lovely daughters, both of whom are now happily married and enjoying families of their own. Retired in 2003 after thirty-one years of teaching, "Shar" loves to read, sing, travel, and spend time with her family—in particular, her adorable grandchildren!
A Christian for over fifty years, and a lover of the English language, Shar always enjoyed dabbling in writing. She remembers well the short stories she wrote in high school, and watching them circulate from girl to girl during government and civics classes. "Psst," someone would whisper from two rows over, always when the teacher’s back was turned, "pass me the next page."
In the early 2000s, Shar felt God’s call upon her heart to take her writing pleasures a step further, and in 2006, she signed a contract for her first faith-based novel, Through Every Storm, thereby launching her writing career. With eighteen published novels now gracing store shelves and being sold online, she daily gives God all the glory. She dedicated her last novel, Their Daring Hearts, to Jesus.
Shar has done numerous countrywide book signings and made several television appearances and radio interviews. She loves speaking for community organizations, libraries, church groups, and women’s conferences. In her church, she is active in women’s ministries, regularly facilitating Bible studies and other events. She and her husband, Cecil, live in Spring Lake, Michigan, with their beautiful white collie, Peyton, and their ragdoll cat, Blue.

Just at a time I was discouraged, I picked up this book to read. Every chapter lifts you and encourages you.

Olivia lost her beloved Frank and is struggling to keep restaurant going. Then along comes Will with a past he does not want to reveal. He gets a job as a cook as current one is leaving.

Will comes up with a way to keep restaurant afloat. But eventually his past is revealed.

Yet there is forgiveness beyond God's forgiveness. I wish I could say all churches forgive like one in this story. I have been in some that do and some that don't.

If you are struggling, read this book. There are three books in the series. This one can stand along but recommend you read it before moving on to others. Experience God's forgiveness anew and encouragement.

At last I have found an author whose books challenge and inspire me to be more than I can be, and I don't have to wade through a thick book on theology to achieve it. MacLaren writes down-to-earth, relatable characters with normal, everyday struggles who somehow by the Grace of God and His divine power and might find a way to trust Him fully. I love loved Livvie's Song. Olivia was tender to her children, yet tough to the core and downright stubborn about giving her heart to Will. Will showed a strenght of character commendable to us all. After ten years in prison one might think he'd emerge a hardened soul, but that's where God's grace comes into play.

Don't miss this wonderfully crafted story. I honestly could not put it down. From page one on, I GOT HOOKED!!! And even after finishing it I'm still struggling to get that hook out of me. This is a story that won't let go!

I had the chance to read the advanced reader's copy, and this book captivated me from start to finish. Love the way the main characters interact with each other - just the right amount of tension and conflict. This story sings, and even after I finished it I couldn't get the people out of my mind - sort of like a melody that keeps playing itself over and over in your head. Simply loved it!

I enjoyed reading this book. Putting lives back together, and forgiving oneself with God's help.

I loved the interaction of Will with Alex and Nate, once he comes to the dinner, he becomes a Father figure for them. He truly loves them and they know it.

I also enjoyed the way Livvie and Will begin to act around each other. Of course, there are always problems, and it seems that people who are not quite right in the mind have found them. There are answers to questions about things that happened years before.

This is the first book in the River of Hope Series and I'm glad there will be more!
