Series: River of Hope
Born and raised in west Michigan, Sharlene attended Spring Arbor University. Upon graduating with an education degree in 1971, she taught second grade for two years, then accepted an invitation to travel internationally for a year with a singing ensemble. In 1975, she married her childhood sweetheart. Together they raised two lovely, wonderful daughters, both of whom are now happily married and enjoying their own families. Retired in 2003 after thirty-one years of teaching, "Shar" loves to read, sing, travel, and spend time with her family-her grandchildren, in particular! Shar launched her writing career in 2006 with the contemporary romance Through Every Storm, a Whitaker House release that was named a finalist for Book of the Year by the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW). Following that was her acclaimed Little Hickman Creek series, consisting of Loving Liza Jane (Road to Romance Reviewer's Choice Award); Sarah, My Beloved (third place, Inspirational Readers' Choice Award 2008); and Courting Emma (third place, Inspirational Reader's Choice Award 2009). Shar's next series, the popular Daughters of Jacob Kane, comprises Hannah Grace (second place, Inspirational Reader's Choice Award 2010), Maggie Rose, and Abbie Ann (third place, Inspirational Reader's Choice Award 2011). Sofia's Secret concludes her latest series, River of Hope, which also comprises Livvie's Song and Ellie's Haven. Shar has done numerous countrywide book signings, television and radio appearances, and interviews. She loves to speak for women's organizations, libraries, church groups, women's retreats, and banquets. She is involved in Apples of Gold, a mentoring program for young wives and mothers, and is active in her church, as well as two weekly Bible studies. She and her husband, Cecil, live in Spring Lake, Michigan, with their beautiful white collie, Peyton.

Jane SquiresWasola, MoAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Forgiveness, grief, and so much moreAugust 12, 2013Jane SquiresWasola, MoAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Just at a time I was discouraged, I picked up this book to read. Every chapter lifts you and encourages you.
Olivia lost her beloved Frank and is struggling to keep restaurant going. Then along comes Will with a past he does not want to reveal. He gets a job as a cook as current one is leaving.
Will comes up with a way to keep restaurant afloat. But eventually his past is revealed.
Yet there is forgiveness beyond God's forgiveness. I wish I could say all churches forgive like one in this story. I have been in some that do and some that don't.
If you are struggling, read this book. There are three books in the series. This one can stand along but recommend you read it before moving on to others. Experience God's forgiveness anew and encouragement.

EstherAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A very well written, refreshing read!May 30, 2011EstherAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5At last I have found an author whose books challenge and inspire me to be more than I can be, and I don't have to wade through a thick book on theology to achieve it. MacLaren writes down-to-earth, relatable characters with normal, everyday struggles who somehow by the Grace of God and His divine power and might find a way to trust Him fully. I love loved Livvie's Song. Olivia was tender to her children, yet tough to the core and downright stubborn about giving her heart to Will. Will showed a strenght of character commendable to us all. After ten years in prison one might think he'd emerge a hardened soul, but that's where God's grace comes into play.
Don't miss this wonderfully crafted story. I honestly could not put it down. From page one on, I GOT HOOKED!!! And even after finishing it I'm still struggling to get that hook out of me. This is a story that won't let go!
Write FASTER, Ms. MacLaren
suzyQMuskegon, MI5 Stars Out Of 5Fabulous read! Couldn't put it down!May 28, 2011suzyQMuskegon, MIQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I had the chance to read the advanced reader's copy, and this book captivated me from start to finish. Love the way the main characters interact with each other - just the right amount of tension and conflict. This story sings, and even after I finished it I couldn't get the people out of my mind - sort of like a melody that keeps playing itself over and over in your head. Simply loved it!
MaureenTSyracuse NYGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Very EnjoyableMay 6, 2011MaureenTSyracuse NYGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I enjoyed reading this book. Putting lives back together, and forgiving oneself with God's help.
I loved the interaction of Will with Alex and Nate, once he comes to the dinner, he becomes a Father figure for them. He truly loves them and they know it.
I also enjoyed the way Livvie and Will begin to act around each other. Of course, there are always problems, and it seems that people who are not quite right in the mind have found them. There are answers to questions about things that happened years before.
This is the first book in the River of Hope Series and I'm glad there will be more!
