Publisher's Description

Find freedom in an age of anxiety.

Let’s face it: we are afraid. Our world is riddled with fear-inducing headlines, financial meltdowns, family crises, and phobias of every stripe. No wonder the New York Times now reports one in ten Americans is now taking antidepressant or anxiety medication. So how do we cope or even succeed in a world spinning out of control? As someone who has battled panic attacks and anxiety most of his life, Lance Hahn can relate.

In How to Live in Fear, Lance tackles the pervasive problem of fear and panic head-on by inviting readers into his world. In this genuine and practical book, he invites readers into the life of a pastor living with anxiety disorder. Through humorous personal stories—like losing it on an airplane or collapsing onstage as he is about to preach—Lance will win over readers with his transparency. He will also share the remedies that have helped him recover and overcome throughout the years.

How to Live in Fear is a public intervention of sorts. We need to talk about this issue, especially the church-at-large. Millions of people suffer from anxiety disorders, and the church has done little to make them feel normal. Many Christians now take medication privately but keep it a secret under the shame of being viewed as a failure. Lance willingly bares his soul in order to get the conversation started. He firmly believes the church should not only recognize the issue, but also help believers reconcile the guilt of being a Christian while dealing with dread and anxiety

Filled with practical tips and advice, and full of relevant scriptures, How to Live in Fear gives readers the tools to relax in the face of fear—real or imagined. Lance will show readers that while he may still encounter bouts of panic, he has never let his disorder stop him from living a full life.

I was giving the book How to Live in Fear Mastering the Art of Freaking Out by Lance Hahn for my honest review from the booklookblogger.com program. I chose to review this book because I have suffered with anxiety. This book is about a Pastor of a large church that suffers with Anxiety. It tells about his anxiety from when he was a small boy to now. The point of the book is to help you know that you are not alone in your struggles with fear and anxiety. He gives tips on how to manage with your fear. This book is split into 3 parts, Living in Fear: My Story, Living in Fear: Our Journey Together and Living in Fear: The Journey with our Father.

I have to honestly say that at this point in my life my anxiety has not been a problem. When I started to read about his experiences with anxiety mine started to bother me again. So I did not get to finish reading this book because I felt it was better for me to put it down at the moment. If you are suffering with anxiety or fear then I would suggest reading this book. It has a lot of great tips in it to help you through. If you are not suffering you may want to save it for later.

I did not agree with everything in this book. He talks about taking medicine for your anxiety and that is not the course I have ever chosen to take. I was only able to skim through the last part of the book because I did not want my triggers to be set off on my own anxiety. I did read some good advice from a Biblical stand point in the last section. This book uses numerous versions of the Bible when it quotes scripture.

All in all I believe if you are suffering with anxiety, panic or fear then this book is worth getting. Its worth a try. Everybody deals with their anxiety in many different ways and what works for one may not work for another. I think this book can be helpful to those having trouble right now.

This book discusses living with panic, anxiety, and fear disorders. The author, Lance Hahn, deals with severe anxiety and fear himself. As our temporary pastor while we read his book, Hahn talks about his own experiences with anxiety, as well as gives advice for living and thriving despite the disorder. I selected this book to review because I suffer from anxiety and panic disorders myself, and I thought it might be helpful (it was).

Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are topics that are too often shamed and avoided in the Christian faith. Those who do come out with their anxiety or depression are told that if they just had more faith or were better Christians, they would be fine, which just is not the case. Unfortunately, way too many people are completely ignorant when it comes to mental health, and they end up doing more harm than good. The difficulty comes in because our problems can't be seen; we look just fine on the outside, so our disorders are not taken seriously.

In the first part of the book, Hahn describes his own experiences with his severe anxiety and fear, starting when he was six years old and lasting through adulthood. He does this so that the reader can see what he experiences and gain compassion and understanding. The reader sees that Hahn understands what they are going through.

Through the second part of the book, Hahn talks about the causes, catalysts, and triggers for anxiety, and the importance of discovering them. He also gives a ton of coping and management techniques, and talks about his experiences with anxiety medication.

In the third and final section, Hahn talks about anxiety as it relates to Scripture and spirituality. He talks about the common Biblical misinterpretations of the words "anxiety" and "worry". People like to tell us Bible verses telling us not to worry, which is great and all, but it doesn't change anything, since we aren't making the decision to panic or be anxious in the first place, the problem is in our DNA. When we panic, we often don't even know why or what caused it; it just happens. The worry and anxiety that the Bible most often talks about is worries about everyday things, not anxiety disorders. Hahn gives examples of Biblical support for people who do suffer with anxiety disorders, and what the Bible really says about them.

I gave this book 5/5 stars, and it is something that I would definitely recommend to anyone, Christian or non-Christian, who suffers from or knows someone who suffers from an anxiety or panic disorder. Lance Hahn is such a wonderful person to hear all of this from. He doesn't just rattle off some Bible verses and tell us to just cheer up, as happens way too often. Hahn really understand anxiety and that having the condition isn't our fault. He writes with such a caring and friendly voice, it's like getting help from a close friend. He shows us that we are not alone. I really enjoyed this book, and it was extremely helpful.

I read this as an ebook, which I found to be really helpful because I could highlight important passages and things that really helped or stood out to me that I can easily find again later. Personally, I am morally against writing it physical copies of books, I know it helps but I just can't do it, so having the ebook allowed me to highlight and take notes, what definitely came in handy throughout the reading of this book. If you read this book, I highly recommend highlighting and note taking.

Part memoir, and part inspirational instruction, How to Live in Fear by Lance Hahn is a refreshingly candid and transparent look at one pastor's struggle with panic and anxiety. With honesty, humility, and humor, Hahn takes the reader deep inside his personal story, sharing his individual journey with a panic disorder, as well as the steps he took (and continues to take) to manage it.

As someone who struggles with panic and anxiety, particularly as of late, this book was a balm to my exhausted and weary soul. Mr Hahn's willingness to so openly share his experiences not only provided the much needed relief of knowing that someone else gets it, but also an overwhelming feeling of hope and inspiration along with the motivation I needed to more proactively seek help and healing myself. Hahn never once condescends or speaks down to the reader, instead choosing to take an understanding approach; one built on partnership and encouragement, from someone who is in the same boat.

Lance Hahn comes across as a gentle friend and cheerleader, giving the reader many good points to consider in their management of their own panic and anxiety. When it comes to the topic of treatment, therapy, and medication, he employs a balanced approach. True to his established style, he is very open about what avenues have worked for him, but offers no judgment on those who choose different paths. Instead he encourages staying open-minded, and not being afraid to explore all modalities of treatment to find what works best for you. He also spends a great deal of time talking about additional steps to take when it comes to self-care, from adjusting your lifestyle, to learning tips to control your mind, to evaluating your spiritual journey (and what an important role that spirituality plays when it comes to your mental health).

This was a beautiful and hopeful book, and one that should be read by any believer who has or is experiencing any form or panic or anxiety.

How to Live in Fear by Lance Hahn is a strategically and spiritually led written book about how to tackle the anxiety disorder in all of us. Lance Hahn is a pastor from Roseville, California who struggles with a severe anxiety disorder. In this book, he writes about his struggle and gives advice through it. He uses his struggle to help others who are possibly going through the same thing or those who have a loved one who is struggling with anxiety like he is.

Anxiety is a disorder that is a lot more common than you may think. Im sure were all afraid of something and having that fear of something may bring along anxiety. This book touches on all levels of anxiety and it covers methods on how to handle and conquer the battle that we have with anxiety.

Lance Hahn goes over three different parts of living with anxiety in this book. In the first part, he goes over his journey of tackling anxiety; his story of his anxiety disorder. Lance writes about different events that have taken place in his life that have given him issues with his anxiety and how he handled them. He also writes about how his family is affected and how they played a role in helping with his issues.

In the second part, Lance goes through the journey he creates with every reader of this book to help with tackling anxiety. He goes over the ups and downs of anxiety (yes, there are some upsides). He takes anxiety and dissects it, in order to relate to and help the reader of this book on a personal level. Lance explains that there are general methods that have helped him with his anxiety and he thinks they can help the reader or the one whos struggling with anxiety. He talks about how anxiety isnt just something that affects you on the inside, but the outside as well. He goes over methods for improvement in both areas. These methods wont only improve your anxiety, but your overall living.

The third part that Lance goes over is the Spiritual part of the journey of tackling anxiety. This part is my favorite, because he may mention his spiritual journey throughout this whole book, but this part of the book really goes in depth on how much God is involved with our lives. This part opened my eyes to how much I dont know about spiritual warfare and what is actually going on when I suffer with anxiety. There have been times when I have thought that my suffering was because of something that I did wrong, but I was wrong about that. Lance Hahn reveals to us in this book a true message of faith and helps us to find the strength to tackle the devils plan with Gods plan that He has for us.

Personally, I dont suffer with severe anxiety. I do have fears, though, that keep me from doing some things that I probably should be doing, for God. I do have someone that is very close to me that suffers from an anxiety disorder. This person hasnt been officially diagnosed, but all of the symptoms are there. This person relies on harmful things to cope with the anxiety and I chose this book to read and review so I can get a better insight and understanding of severe anxiety to help this certain person in my life. Little did I know, I would not only get insight for that other person, but I got insight for myself and how I can tackle my fears and the suffering that I go through.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is going through the battle of anxiety. No matter what level of fear it may be. I also recommend this book to anyone who is living with or close to someone that is going through a battle with anxiety. This book let me see things from the perspective of someone that is going through a battle with severe anxiety and I feel like it will help me be more compassionate and patient towards my loved one that is going through the same battle.

I was given this book for free in exchange for a book review from bookbloggers
