Product Description

Laura Ingalls' story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods in Wisconsin. Four-year-old Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard, since the family must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her folks celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa's fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep.

And so begins Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier past and a heartwarming, unforgettable story. Recommended for ages 8 to 12.

Author Bio

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

Garth Williams's classic illustrations for the Little House books caused Laura to remark that she "and her folks live again in these pictures." Garth Williams also illustrated Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and almost one hundred other books.

I am 7 years old and in 3rd grade, and I just finished reading "Litttle House In the Big Woods" and I thought it was a really good book. On the whole the book was an easy read, but some of the words were hard. I liked the pictures in the book. I think the person who drew the pictures was very talented. I found some of the chapters very long, but that's okay because some were short. The book had some very funny parts in it, like when Pa thought he saw a bear but it was only a tree stump. I also liked it that Laura and Mary like to play dolls just like my sisters and I. I would recommend this book to all by friends and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
