Laura Ingalls's story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Four-year-old Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack.
Pioneer life is sometimes hard, since the family must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her folks celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa's fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep. 238 pages, paperback. Recommended for ages 8 to 12.

Little House in the Big Woods, the first book in the Little House series, takes place in 1871 and introduces us to four-year-old Laura, who lives in a log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. She shares the cabin with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their lovable dog, Jack.
Pioneer life isn’t easy for the Ingalls family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But they make the best of every tough situation. They celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do their spring planting, bring in the harvest in the fall, and make their first trip into town. And every night, safe and warm in their little house, the sound of Pa’s fiddle lulls Laura and her sisters into sleep.
The nine books in the timeless Little House series tell the story of Laura’s real childhood as an American pioneer, and are cherished by readers of all generations. They offer a unique glimpse into life on the American frontier, and tell the heartwarming, unforgettable story of a loving family.
Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.
Garth Williams's classic illustrations for the Little House books caused Laura to remark that she "and her folks live again in these pictures." Garth Williams also illustrated Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and almost one hundred other books.
TXmommyTXAge: 25-345 Stars Out Of 5Slow start but a great readJanuary 22, 2013TXmommyTXAge: 25-34Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I had never read a Little House book before but decided that I wanted to read one with my kids. It was a slow start, seemed like there was much detail and little excitement. I didn't mind it too much, I liked the details given about life back then, but I felt the kids were a little bored. HOWEVER, after a little bit the book began to pick up and my kids ended up loving it! The pictures are great and the story is very good. I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series!
JOSHUA L.5 Stars Out Of 5January 14, 2010JOSHUA L.I've had this book almost 3 or 4 years now. I've read it twice. I have others by her. Not hte whole set, but most of it. But I really haven't read them before last summer, except for the first one. It is very nicely made. The pages aren't regular paper. And the front cover is protected very nicely. Although I sat on mine by accident a few years ago you can hardly tell. It is highly recommened.
