Laura Sobiech tells the amazing story of how God used her sons battle with cancer to touch the lives of millions.
Okay, Lord, you can have him. But if he must die, I want it to be for something big. I want someones life to be changed forever.
This is what Laura Sobeich prayed when she found out her seventeen-year-old son had only one year to live. With this desperate prayer, she released her son to Gods will.
At that point, Zach Sobiech was just another teenager battling cancer. When his mother told him to think about writing good-bye letters to family and friends, he decided instead to write songs. One of them, Clouds, captured hearts and changed not one life but millions, making him an international sensation.
But Zachs story is not just about music. Its a testament to what can happen when you live as if each day might be your last. Its a story about the human spirit. Its about how God used a dying boy from a small town in Minnesota to touch the hearts of millionsincluding top executives in the music industry, major music artists, news anchors, talk show hosts, actors, priests and pastors, and school children across the globe.
Zach once said, I want to be known as the kid who went down fighting, and didnt really lose. Fly a Little Higher is about how God used Zach to do something big.
Laura Sobiech lives in Minnesota with her husband where they have raised four children: one married, one in college, one in heaven, and one in high school. Laura has spent the past three years walking the road of cancer with her teenage son, Zach, and blogging about their battle with the disease. She lives in Lakeland, Minnesota.

Boy, was this book difficult to get through! It was not that it was not interesting, in fact, it was written in a very conversational way tone. Laura immediately drew me in and I felt as if, I was her friend. Even more, she was kindly sharing her story with me. Unfortunately, I know how it ends and so it was both encouraging and heartbreaking at the same time.
It's often been said that parents should not have to bury their children. In my short life, I've had to bear witness to a number of friends who have had to do this very thing and it just feels wrong. The author, Laura must also do this and yet the Lord gave her grace to persevere and get through it. As if that wasn't difficult enough, Laura shares the tumultuous road she walked while they tried to fight the cancer, its affect on their family, and the weight it brought on her marriage (which almost didn't make it). What shone through most of all was how her dear son, Zach, radiated so much joy and thoughtfulness in the midst of his illness and the recognition that his life was going to be cut short.
My faith gives me a biblical worldview for all things in life, in particular suffering and disease. Although, I definitely do not pretend to understand how the Lord chooses to allow what He does, I do know that we all have an opportunity to respond to what our God allows in our life. Clearly, Zach was not perfect, but as his mother shares, from the beginning the Lord gave this young man an ability to respond with tremendous grace, love, and even joy.
In the beginning of the book, Laura shares how she doesn't appreciate "preachy" people that "dump tenets of their faith in your lap...and walk away." In short, saying that we must not only talk the talk, but in fact, walk the walk of faith. Just as James 1:22 tells us, if we speak of tremendous faith and knowledge and yet, still live as ones with no hope, we deceive ourselves. In short, the most powerful means of sharing the gospel is living the gospel. We must be not only hearers of the word, but doers of the word. Laura was privileged to have parents that wholly lived out their faith and then, God in His kindness and mercy, gave her Zach. Her precious son, despite his youth, was able to tell the story of his life of faith, by "being joyful in the midst of suffering, and he did it without uttering a word."
This was beautiful and hard book to read and in the end, this young man was able to leave a legacy much bigger than he could have ever imagined. I was heartbroken, yet encouraged... prepare the tissue!

Must read this book!! When I picked this book, I was not sure I would be able to read it without a box of tissues.... Well I read it from cover to cover in one day and only needed a tissue at the very end. After reading the reviews of others and how emotional they were reading this I thought am I heartless? Then I finished and thought about the story and realized, I got it! I understand Zach's message, the story of Hope and an act of GOD's grace, it is so inspiring that if you believe in the power of GOD and HIS works then you will understand where Zach was in life. Don't misunderstand me, Zach's story is sad, however, his love of life and his faith in GOD brings perspective to his journey in life and dealing with death at such a young age. It is so inspirational and filled with love that you are feeling sad, but have that peace in your heart that says live, love, laugh even if you only have a short time on this earth.
Laura, Zach's mom, tells the story of Zach's journey with a very rare cancer (Osteosarcoma) and how he wrote a song to say goodbye, "Clouds" became #1 and the Hope for everyone to never give up the fight, always keep fighting till the end. She tells of family, friends, and all the people you touch in your journey through this life.
I want everyone to read this story and share it!! It is the best book I have read in a long time. So much love is in this book that you can't put it down. Laura did such a classy job telling this story that you want everyone to hear her side of being a mom and dealing with such an emotional rollercoaster of dealing with your son having cancer. Buy this book and then share with everyone, you won't be disappointed nor will you be able to put this book down. Thank you Laura for sharing such an emotional and encouraging part of your life.

loreallepaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Amazing Book!!!May 12, 2014loreallepaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Last year, the video below was circling on Facebook. The title caught my eye, and I clicked on it. What followed was the most amazing and brave yet saddest thing I've ever watched. I've watched it 3 times, each time crying the entire way through.
Zach Sobiech, at the age of 14, found out he had a rare form of terminal cancer. So he became a rock star, and millions of people got to see his music before he passed away on May 20, 2013. While he was sick, his mother kept a journal which eventually turned a book.
I am dreading writing this review. But I have to keep my word of writing an honest review. I've read through chapter 10 and I just can't go further. Emotionally I just can't do it. Call me a wuss, call me a baby, it's all true. I've cried the entire way through the first 10 chapters and I just can't continue to do that to myself emotionally.
This story is real. What their family went through is absolutely heartbreaking, and I don't want my review to take away from that. Don't let my crybaby-ness deter you from buying this book. They are amazing people with quite a story to tell.
This book was provided to me free of charge by Book Look in return for my honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
