Tell us a little about yourself. I am a retired teacher after 36 years of teaching. The last 13 were in juvenile corrections. Graduated from Huntington University in 1972 where I majored in physical education, health, and recreation and minored in English and science. I later added driver's education to my teaching degree. At Huntington I received my varsity letter in basketball and volleyball. In 2005 I finished my Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Bread of Life Bible College. in 2014 Chicken Soup for the Soul published my story, "Talking Potato", in their "Living with Alzheimer's & Other Dementias" book which sold out in 3 weeks and they went to a second printing.
What was your motivation behind this project? People told me from little up that I was creative, funny and should write a book. Latter in life I received a prophetic word that I would write a trilogy. The Lord gave me the tiles, subtitles and showed me how to set these three devotionals up on the page. I write in analogies and use a lot of humor and scripture. The true stories about teaching, pets, growing up, sports, family and many other topics keep the reader entertained and the scripture teaches them what God's Word says.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Many times in my life as a teacher, athlete, coach, friend or with family, I saw the benefits of humor to lighten a mood or bring happiness to someone going through a difficult situation. The Lord has brought so much joy to me through His "one-liners" and sharing with me the answers and encouragement I needed. My devotions teach, encourage and exhort people to spend time with the Lord and to listen to HIS (voice) heartbeat. God created man to fellowship with Him. He loves us. As they learn His Word, they will begin to know who He is and sense His Love.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I take writing for my Lord very serious and continue to ask Him if I am "writing what He wants". I love when I start to write and think that I know which way an analogy will go, only to hear Him giving me a new direction. I begin writing so fast that I have asked Him to slow down because I can't write that fast. When I finish and read the analogy, I am so impressed with how His idea was so much better than the way I was going. Then, I know that He is writing through me and that is one of the best feelings in the world. When someone calls or emails or writers to me and shares how my devotion books have helped them and that they are back serving the Lord, I cry with joy and thank the Lord for using me as His servant.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My father, Robert John Etter, taught me from little up about prayer, Bible reading, hearing God's voice and the importance of obeying God. He walked these out in front of me, prayed for me, answered my questions and was my best friend. Many Bible Study teachers and friends also have influenced me. One day I walked into a hospital room and the lady said, "I prayed that you would come see me because I knew if you did, you would make me laugh." Those words changed my life. I so enjoy making someone that is going through a hard situation laugh and have a break from what they are going through. Some of my favorite authors are: Oswald Chambers, Smith Wigglesworth, Perry Stone, Joyce Meyer, Jennifer Le Claire and Janice Cantore to name a few.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I am currently writing the third book of this "Listen To HIS Heartbeat" trilogy. I have stories in three Hidden Brook Press anthology books and in two Chicken Soup for the Soul books, "Living with Alzheimer's & Other Dementias" and "for Mom, with love" (which was a collection of their favorite stories for moms from their bestselling books). The "Listen To HIS Heartbeat" devotions can be read in any order, have both humor and scripture, and are easy and fun to read. All three books have the Plan of Salvation and encourage readers to pray the Salvation Prayer and accept Jesus as their Savior. These devotion books not only entertain but are good teaching tools. Chapter titles such as "God's One-Liners", "You Can't Pull a Goat", "God Uses Sump Pumps and Burning Bushes" will pique your curiosity! Wonderful gifts!
