The various reviews are correct as far as they go, but understand that the English used will frustrate your senses. This volume deserves a more modern updating as it overwhelms one with the multiplicity of expressions, phrases, descriptions, and seemingly unending sentence structure. It is a task to wade through because of the very wealth of descriptive information. So why bother when there are so many easier tomes to read? And this is a TOME ! You must bother because during all the time it takes to read and digest, you will find yourself drowned in the GOODNESS of the FATHER, resusitated with the BREATH of the HOLY SPIRIT, and energized in the LIFE of the LIVING SAVIOUR.
It is very wordy, but if one can digest the substance of the material, it will be of benefit far beyond what you think. I had to purchase the book again because some years ago I already had a copy but passed it along to another. I simply did not know what I had. Now I do. A great book and well worth the time to read and study.
The definitive work on the life of Christ and the times in which He lived. Born in 1825 to a Jewish family, Mr. Edersheim was educated in the Talmud and Torah before entering the University of Vienna. His subsequent conversion to Christianity brought to Christendom a learned appreciation of the Jewish religion and culture. His research and writing provides what is still the most thorough analysis of Jesus and the world in which He ministered. His Christian orthodoxy is reflected in the reverence with which he handles the biblical text. Originally published in 1883, every Bible teacher will benefit from having this scholarly text in their library. Although more than a century old, it remains a most readable and enlightening book for anyone seriously studying the life and ministry of Jesus.
