Pre-Algebra 1 with Biology is the second book in the Life of Fred Pre-Algebra Series (the fourth in the "Getting Ready for High School Math" series that includes both Arithmetic & Pre-Algebra books), and is designed for students who have completed the elementary, intermediate, and arithmetic series books. Most students who use this series are in middle school. Providing a fun integration of subjects, this textbook gives students a context that matters in the real world-the interplay between science and math. Age-appropriate, this book does not discuss reproduction, the digestive system, or evolution.
Forty-six chapters are included, each of which ends with a "Your Turn to Play" segment with a small number of thought-provoking questions. Answers are provided on the next page for students to go over themselves after attempting to solve the problems. "The Bridge" review questions are given after 7 or so chapters, and provide transitions between concepts as well as a means of assessment. For parents who choose to use these sections as evaluation tools, it is recommended that students score at least 90% before moving on. If students don't succeed, they can try again with a total of five different sets of problems. The book concludes with "The Final Bridge" which has 21 questions (with again five tries provided). Answers to the Bridge questions are provided in the back of the book.
Pre-Algebra 1 with Biology covers: The Definition of Life, Sets, Fractions, Germination of Seeds, Area of a Rectangle, Volume of a Cube, Ordinal Numbers, Diameter and Circumference of a Circle, Definition of pi, 2 percent of 500, Four Ways Plants Make New Plants, d = rt, 20% Discount, the Five Kingdoms, Phyla, Classes, Orders, Families, Genera, Species, Your Brain, Conversion Factors, Where the Non-Water Mass of a Plant Comes From-Plants Don't Eat Dirt, Subsets of Sets, Digestion, Eyes, Negative Numbers, Dominant Genes, Genotypes, Phenotypes, Blood, Staying Alive, Solving Algebraic Equations, Volume of a Cylinder, Word Problems, Breathing, Chlorophyll vs. Hemoglobin vs. Hemocyanin, Avogadro's Number, Stoichiometry, the Whole Numbers, a Proof that Division by Zero is Not Permitted, Bones, the Integumentary System, Epidermis and Dermis, Meiosis and Mitosis, Chromosomes, DNA, Alleles, Changing Your Phenotype.
Life of Fred is a unique, complete (not supplemental), math program that uses a highly engaging narrative to teach math without fear and with enjoyment. Students follow the life of Fred Gauss (a math professor who grows up to the age of six), who has many humorous, unlikely, and zany adventures over the course of the curriculum. Math becomes relevant and important because the need for math occurs in Fred's life (and he sees math everywhere). Witty and truly entertaining, these books will engage students in a way unlike any other math program - --while also instilling a solid understanding of the principles of mathematics without an abundance of repetitive drills. This series is perfect for inquisitive students who struggle with the relevance of math, or anyone looking for a creative approach to mathematic thinking!
288 pages, indexed; hardcover, non-consumable textbook with Smyth-sewn binding. Students write their answers on separate paper. Answers are also included in the text and written directly to the student.

Linda KerrMAAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Best math curriculum ever!April 27, 2016Linda KerrMAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5We are continuing our Life of Fred math adventure. Pre-Algebra 1 with Biology started out a little easier than the previous volume with Physics, but a dozen lessons in, my son is enjoying all he's learning in both biology and math. If switching from a traditional curriculum in early middle school, we recommend starting with Fractions -- going at double-pace if it seems easy -- until you find it more challenging. The Fractions and then Decimals and Percents books set a foundation for thinking and problem-solving that are necessary as you continue through the curriculum.
This is what my 12-year-old son has to say: "I like Fred Math because it's not just a bunch of math problems. And you don't just learn things about the book topic but also extra stuff about math and things like grammar and science. And it's funny." ~Josiah
