The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams features Dan Haggerty as James Grizzly Adams, a character loosely based on a 19th century woodsmen.
After being accused of a crime he did not commit, Adams Haggerty takes sanctuary in a remote mountain area in the American west, where he discovers and befriends an orphaned grizzly cub. The cub eventually grows into a full-sized Grizzly bear that Adams affectionately calls Ben. Together, Adams and Ben learn to survive in the wilderness, assisted by an old trader named "Mad Jack" (played by Denver Pyle - The Dukes of Hazzard and a Native American named Nakoma played by Don Shanks). Impressed with the way Adams has adapted to his environment and for his uncanny rapport with animals, Nakoma and Jack come to appreciate Adams' harmonious existence with nature. Unfortunately, Adams needs to be watchful for bounty hunters, even as he protects the wildlife he grows to cherish.
Compelling, entertaining and hugely popular, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams offered its audience a unique viewing experience, vastly different from the sitcoms and dramas that flooded the airwaves at the time. 4 discs, approx. 620 total minutes.

ButterflyMom2 Stars Out Of 5Patience needed! Fun journey. Much to learn.January 21, 2015ButterflyMomQuality: 2Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3Okay, first to review this DVD, I will say I loved Grizzly Adams as a child. I always desired to hear the opening music as I remembered it as being uplifting and inspirational. The music is still good. I loved animals as a child, there are plenty to love.
Now, as an adult, I like to view movies that have clear cinematography, mainly because I have vision issues. This one is grainy.
I need close caption because characters were, for me, hard to understand. There were none.
The second season seemed a little better visually. Still no close captions. I also fumbled when I assumed that the two movies I purchased after I purchased both seasons, were after the series ended. No! They are both taken from the series. Be aware of that also. I sent one back, kept the other, as I had been given that one as a gift. But they are on the series disk, not additional movies.
As I stated before, I loved this show as a child but now I am grown. Mad Jack may not have bothered me as a child but as an adult, his character became unbearable. No, that is not a pun as one of the main characters is a bear. Ben the bear is delightful. Many hours you will have watching the many tricks this guy will do.
Now on a more positive note. Dan Haggerty was still my delight in both of these series. My 17 year old loved them all. My 49 year old husband tolerated a few, then gave up. I loved watching him play a positive, loving and very gentle and patient skilled woodsman. I am disappointed the storyline was not allowed to wrap up and play out, but that seems the norm when a series abruptly ends. I believe the writers, directors and producers should then be legally allowed to produce movies that do go on to wrap up and finish the story line, and make them available to consumers who are fans.
Maybe that will happen one day. Not much money to be made as no sponsors and maybe not enough interest, but a gal can hope!
I personally fill in the gaps with my own imagination.
I think there is one more movie; Escape to Grizzley Mountain, but I have not checked that one out yet. I will hold onto my movies because I value them, I have not watched all episodes, but most of them. My other delight was the many guest stars. I believe if you were in the F-troop, Mash, and many other early sit-com fan group, you will enjoy the guest stars, if not, it is doubtful you will recognize them. I had fun just trying to identify where I had seen the people. Also I love it when a show will have characters based on real historical figures. The writing of these characters was great. You will enjoy that for sure. Get past the lack of hearing what the characters are saying, the grainy vision and Mad Jack and you may have fun. Just want to revisit an escape to Grizzly Adams, go for it!
Love seeing animals perform, enjoy. Dislike the same situation playing out in a different scene, rethink this one. Do not want to waste money, pass! All in all it is a great series to share but I am not sure I would recommend it to anyone other than a diehard fan...or anyone without patience, good vision and hearing or who did not love animals. My husband also thought Adams was too sweet! Well I did not. Your husband or Father may not like it, but I think gals who love gentle men of character will.

No pornography, no violence that I can think of, and good morals are taught. It is also interesting, funny, has great scenery and the animals are cute. Also, unlike some series, ALL the programs were good. Occasionally, one of the programs may have been somewhat slow moving, but not many were and they had cute animals in them anyway.
My mom looked for this series for years and was glad it finally came out. The only thing I am not happy with is that they didn't make more seasons!
