In this heart-warming picture book designed for girls, author Glenys Nellist tells the inspiring stories of incredible women in the Bible. With beautiful illustrations by Rachel Clowes and sweet lift-the-flap envelopes, each story delivers a special message for children to open as they read their own personal love letters from God. Full of warmth and love, this picture book will fill girls hearts with the wonder of the Lord. The stories of Eve, Miriam, Esther, Mary, and many more will delight children and remind them of the bond they can share with God, just like the women of the Bible.
Glenys Nellist was born and raised in a little village in northern England. Her stories and poems have been published in childrens magazines where her writing reflects a deep passion for bringing the Bible to life for young children. Glenys lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with her husband, David.
Rachel Clowes grew up in South London and studied illustration at Cambridge School of Art. She began her career in childrens magazines and has been illustrating ever since. Rachel lives in Yorkshire, England with her husband, also an illustrator, her three sons and two cats.
Lini536Cambridge, MAAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Sweet, Colorful & InspirationalJuly 9, 2017Lini536Cambridge, MAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Designed for young girls, each story taken from the Bible, is transformed in to a letter of love from God.
From The First Girl (Eve), through to others such as The Busy Girl (Martha), The Hopeful Girl (Hannah) and the Happy Girl (Mary Magdalene), the stories teach a young child how to have courage, strength and understanding all with the knowledge that God is always in their corner.
Whilst the stories have been retold in a child-friendly manner, the author references the passage in the bible, so whomever is reading can find it and read the whole story directly. With a few lines from scripture and little lift-flaps containing the love letter from God, this book is interactive and will be an inspiration for girls of all ages. Beautifully illustrated by Rachel Clowes, the inviting, colorful, images enhance the stories and will bring the message of God alive for all young readers.
I read this with my three years old, and she enjoyed opening the letters, especially as each letter is left blank for you to insert your childs name. It certainlymade it morepersonal for her. There is an envelope at the end for the reader/little girl to write her own thoughts and feelings to God. As she is still so young, it will be something she can do when she's older.
An enjoyable read and a great introduction to the women of the Bible, their stories and the meaning behind them. A recommended read.

BernCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Nice illustrationsJune 20, 2017BernCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3I love the word of God and how powerful it is. The Bible is the words of God spoken to us and "God breathed". In this sense, I loved the idea of these love letters from God.
Each of these stories follows 14 different women of the Bible and shares their situations and circumstance. I appreciate that each story was meant to be more easily understood by a young girl. Each section was done in a manner that would be age appropriate, even Rahab's section talked of making poor choices and desiring to make a change in her life.
I think that the book would have been more powerful for young girls had they used the words of God, actual scripture, particularly in the letters portion where God does have promises for each of us that are His.
Anita5 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful BookJune 19, 2017AnitaQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Another beautiful Love Letters from God book from Glenys Nellist. These stories touched my heart as did the others in this series. Beautiful illustrations and the letters from God are relevant for all ages. I will be giving one to our granddaughter for her 10th birthday and am considering giving one to our other granddaughter who just graduated high school. I think girls of any age would be touched by the words in these stories about women of the Bible. I know I was! Beautiful illustrations. I am adding this to my daily devotions.
No Idle Bread3 Stars Out Of 5Very Beautifully Illustrated, Not a Fan of the Biblical ParaphrasingJune 3, 2017No Idle BreadQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3This book is intended for little girls, ages 4-8 years old. It has 14 stories that are all about various women in the Bible--7 from the Old Testament and 7 from the New Testament. Some of the women are well known, such as Eve or Mary, the mother of Jesus. Others are lesser known like Naaman's servant girl or the Widow with two mites.
Each story is a two-page spread: one side for the story and the other for a beautifully illustrated picture. The colors are bright and inviting and I love how the characters are depicted according to the historical setting. Once the little girl reads the story, she can then lift an envelope flap on the page and read a note that is intended to be "written" by God to her. There's even space to write in your child's name so the notes can be personalized, just like receiving their own mail. Each note ties in some truth from the Bible story to a truth about the child. For example, in the story about Eve, the author highlights that God loved Eve as a part of His creation, calling her good, and still loving her after she had done wrong. In the "love letter from God", the little girl is told that He made her and that anything He makes is good. It says that He will love her and offer forgiveness, just as He did with Eve. This pattern is the same through out the book for each story.
I like the idea of the book overall. I think it would be sweet and endearing to a little girl. I understand that the author wants to convey the idea that God loves every little girl and has a personal interest in every aspect of their lives, just as He did with the women in the Bible. However, I'm a little uncomfortable with the notes explicitly saying, "your caring friend, GOD" or "love, GOD," as though He actually wrote it.
Also, each story is very heavily adapted from the recounting giving in God's Word. While this may be thought to be "easier" for the child to read (which I can definitely understand), it interferes with Biblical accuracy, which is really important to me. Also, I am still an advocate of children hearing the Scriptures read to them so that they develop an ear for it, not an ear for paraphrasing. In any case, the Scriptural reference is given for each one of the stories, which I think is very important, so little girls will know where to find the Scripture and story for themselves.

Each page has a girl from the bible and her story. It also includes a short bible verse, a prayer, and a "love letter from God". It also includes illustrations from Rachel Clowes.
Though this book was too young for my 12 year old girl, it wasn't long ago that I was reading to her things of this nature. It reads like a devotional and I think it would make great night time reading for a girl of early grade school years. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Handlebar Publishing.
