Tell us a little about yourself. I was born into a conservative fundamental Christian family. As soon as I left home, I rebelled against my parent's teaching and my conservative upbringing. I became heavily involved in the "sex, drugs, and rock & roll" of the 1970s while in the army. God rescued me from my own rebellion and stupidity through a very difficult series of life circumstances over the next thirty years. I finally came to the end of myself completely and surrendered everything to Jesus Christ fourteen years ago. God has been making up for lost time with me since then. I'm now a nondenominational Christian minister, and Christian writer. I'm heavily involved in altar ministry and discipleship ministry at James River Church in southwest Missouri. My wife and I are James River Life Group leaders (this is James River's small group/house church ministry), and I currently serve as a volunteer chaplain for a national service company.
What was your motivation behind this project? I had been counselling with my friend, Troy, for several years after meeting him in the new believer's Discovery class at James River Church. I was very concerned about Troy and his Christian walk when I suffered a heart attack in 2013. After surviving the medical emergency, I decided to write out my personal testimony for Troy along with many of the life lessons I have learned the "hard way". This became the book, Letter To Troy; Echoes Of Redemption.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope they will see from my testimony, and the scriptures that are shared in the book, that God's grace is immeasurably more powerful than our failure and weakness. I hope they will see that, if Jesus would save "this guy", He will save anyone. I hope they will come to understand that, "God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him". I hope many will come to salvation through Jesus with the help of the truths contained in this book.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Writing this book was very emotionally trying because it made me relive many of the very stupid things I have done in the past. At the same time though, it reminded me of the awesome power of God's grace through Jesus.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Jesus The Messiah. My late father, Reverend Charles G. Caringer My pastors, Reverend John Lindell and Reverend Tim Keene My employer, Ken Stallings C.S.Lewis Chuck Smith Andy Stanley Billy Graham The late Reverend Marion Rodgers
