Lee HughesSacramento, CAAge: 55-65Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Great idea for fulfilling your new year's resolutionsDecember 20, 2014Lee HughesSacramento, CAAge: 55-65Gender: maleWhat a great premise for a book! I'm not familiar with another book that takes 17 imperatives from Jesus' utterances (hence the title "Red Letter..." - some bibles put the words of Jesus in red letters) and discusses each of them. From "Come" to "Go", the book takes one through much of what a Christian needs to do. It also corrects some common misunderstandings and clarifies some murky interpretations.
There are several chapters I found particularly strong, but the chapter on "Forgive!" is the best treatise on the subject I have ever read. It was both inspirational and transformational. But the book if for no other reason than to read this chapter.
But many of the others come close to the same level, and reading just the one would miss the point. I used the book as a devotional for several months; it is written in such a way that headings happen often, and even as little as a couple of pages at a time is instructive.
I heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in learning what Jesus wanted us to be and do, not just what he wanted us to believe.
The fact that the book is dedicated to me and my older brother is of no bearing on the review. As someone once said (in red letters) "A prophet is without honor in his own country." But while the standard is higher in one's own country I must say that (having read many of Bob's books - but not all of them) this is probably my second favorite. You'll have to read my other reviews of Bob's books to find out which is my favorite.
This is definitely a good read.
MaryCincinnati, OHAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5I was drawn closer to God word by wordJune 5, 2014MaryCincinnati, OHAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The purpose of this book is clearly stated in the title and Hostetler stays true to it throughout this journey into Jesus' teachings. He takes you on a step by step progression of words Jesus used and words Jesus lived to demonstrate how we can incorporate their concepts into our own lives. Hostetler deftly takes the reader deeper with each chapter beginning with the word Come and concluding with the word Go. He illustrates each word with often fascinating original context, insights of his own, and meaningful research from other authors. He includes well developed personal applications and finishes each chapter with truly challenging exercises.
I have read many books of this genre but this is one of the best. His tone is personal and his style engaging. This serves him well because he does not shy away suggesting life applications in the chapters on the meatier topics such as Forgiving and Serving. In chapter after chapter I encountered ideas that encouraged, affirmed and sometimes challenged my own walk with God. The way Hostetler puts the words into the original context just makes it all so very real and intimate.
I recommend this book for both personal study and for small groups. There is an abundance of wisdom for both inward reflection and ideas that will foster animated group discussions. The knowledge that he makes so accessible will benefit the new believer as well as challenge long time Christ followers. As Hostetler so clearly shows us, it's not just about words, it's about a life of purpose.

Jesus FreakLima, OHAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Life changingJune 4, 2014Jesus FreakLima, OHAge: 45-54Gender: femaleThe Red Letter Life stresses to the reader 17 simple words Jesus speaks in the Bible such as faith, follow, hear, come, repent, take, beware, bring, abide, and more. Some of the words may often get passed over without taking time to ponder what effect they could have in one's life.
This book is not only a great read for a new believer, but also a book of application for believers that draws the reader closer to Jesus, helps the reader examine one's personal encounter(s) with Jesus, bringing clarity, healing and restoration in many areas of life.
The Red Letter Life is filled with Scripture, everyday experiences, reason and many other Christian writers who help readers understand the importance of these simple words. This book challenges the reader with thought and life provoking questions that can provoke change and healing, restoration and confirmation and growth and holiness.
In the words of a student quoted in the book, "one thing I've noticed is that if you really are going to start living this way and you start making big changes in your life, eventually it starts to change who you are from the inside out. . ." Are you up for the challenge?
DSH for JesusAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5A fresh look at timeless truth for everyone.June 2, 2014DSH for JesusAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Red Letter Life is going to be one of those books that serve some as a ready primer to the Christian Faith. Others will read and reread it throughout their lives as a go-to book for encouragement, teaching or reminder of what Jesus is all about.
Bob Hostetler's easy style is rich and encouraging and readable without ever feeling like he's insulting the reader. There's depth to challenge the aggressive reader and simplicity to make this a coffee table book or gift for others.
Red Letter Life introduces readers to Christianity, but it may not be the "Jesus" many think they know. We learn that while the way to God is open to everyone, it is not a way that is easy for anyone. It was costly to Jesus and is often costly to genuine followers but Bob shows that the cost of following Jesus is more than worth it considering the benefits that come from knowing Christ.
I like these lines: "If your heart is hurting, come [to Jesus]. If your soul feels like it is shrinking, come. If your strength is depleted, come." This is not Christianity "lite," and it is not highfalutin' religiosity. This is Jesus on display and its worth your time to read it.
NOTE: I was provided with a complimentary copy of the book to review, but I was under no obligation to write anything other than my own critique.
