In Leather Shoe Charlie by Gyeong-hwa Kim, Charlie is a boy living in England during the time of the Industrial Revolution. When the family comes on hard times, they move to Manchester to find work in the mills. Where they were hoping to find opportunity and prosperity instead they find deplorable working and living conditions. Even the children are meant to work, and the workers all begin to call Charlie "Leather Shoe Charlie", for the fine leather shoes that his cobbler grandfather made him make a click, click, click sound. When Charlie's mother comes down with a bad cough that won't go away, and the family doesn't have enough money for the medicine she needs, Charlie makes a sacrifice to help his family. Includes historical information in the back about the Industrial Revolution.
