With wit and wisdom, he uses stories, research data, and biblical insights to explore God's "hiring" practices, and shows how inadequacies and brokenness create the most effective leaders.
I think that the author's premise is one that we don't often practically consider as we go through our lives -- God's strength is made perfect in our weakness. Often we focus on our own knowledge, skills and abilities, the strengths we have and we try to cover up and minimize our weaknesses. However, what if we were to openly admit our weaknesses and allow God to work in and through us. This would result in us truly being molded and shaped into the person He wants us to be. I think the concept is great, and there are some tremendous parts in the book to which I wish more people would be exposed. The problem is the author writes at such a high level that I don't think many people would take the time to get through the book and be able to understand and apply it. If he could simplify it (and by that I don't mean to dumb it down) it would be a more accessible, approachable and appreciated work.
Dan Allender is a former drug pusher who is now the president of Mars Hill Graduate School for seminary students. His book is not a slick 5-step self-help book for Christian leaders, but rather an honest look at the struggles and challenges that face all Christians whether they have a formal leadership role or not. His frank storytelling about the conflict within Christian organizations is at time bother fascinating and difficult to read. It has been a tremendous blessing to me, and I highly recommend it.
