I did read some of the reviews and it seems they expected much more than the set was designed for. I am a young Christian and I find it gives me what I need. If I feel prompted to look more deeply, then I use other sources for research and study. I would recommend this to someone who is new to Bible study. If you have a theology or divinity degree, don't waste your money. It will be better spent on something like the Pulpit Commentary.
Like the other reviewers have said, this might make a great resource for a deacon, but I hold a basic mdiv and could not find anything useful or that I didn't already know. If you're internet savvy, you'd get much more out of the Matthew Henry Commentary or some other commentary that is free online. It's sooo basic.
This is a well written and carefully thought out commentary. Easy to read and understand and surprisingly comprehensive. It is an excellent companion to a good Study Bible of any translation. Gives you that somthing extra to enhance your understanding of the Bible.
We recently purchased 5 sets of the Laymen's Bible Commentary as gifts for newly ordained deacons. The comments were, "This commentary is readable and does an excellent job of making difficult passage easy to understand." After the pastor reviewed the set, we purchased him the hardback leather bound set.
