This book was obviously not designed to be a commentary for deep study. it rather gives a VERY brief chapter by chapter overview. If you are a new Bible student and tend to get bogged down in some of the books of the prophets (for example, the book of Jeremiah) by the lists of names and fathers and towns of this one and that, this will prove to be helpful to briefly summarize (in a few sentences) what is included in each chapter. It is not intended to replace Bible reading or commentaries. I would recommend this little book to any new Christian or for anyone needing quick reference to refresh your memory as to what is covered in each chapter. I sometimes read it after I finish my daily Bible reading just for a recap if a chapter was a bit wordy. If you are a Bible scholar or someone who has long studied your BIble, this is not the commentary you are looking for. You won't learn anything new. This is very basic.

My husband surprised me with these books. His thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated. However, the books are a poor source of a commentary use. You can get the same information on the bottom of your bible notes as you can in this set. Honestly, I would not even pay $10 for the set. They are very basic and skim on the lines of being called a commentary set.

I did read some of the reviews and it seems they expected much more than the set was designed for. I am a young Christian and I find it gives me what I need. If I feel prompted to look more deeply, then I use other sources for research and study. I would recommend this to someone who is new to Bible study. If you have a theology or divinity degree, don't waste your money. It will be better spent on something like the Pulpit Commentary.

This review was written for Layman's Bible Commentary Set.
Like the other reviewers have said, this might make a great resource for a deacon, but I hold a basic mdiv and could not find anything useful or that I didn't already know. If you're internet savvy, you'd get much more out of the Matthew Henry Commentary or some other commentary that is free online. It's sooo basic.
