Publisher's Description

In 2011, the first of the 76 million baby boomers--nearly a quarter of the US population--began turning 65. Every day for the next fifteen years, over ten thousand of them will celebrate that birthday. And for the first time in history, this generation will enjoy many years post-career pursing meaning and purpose outside of traditional retirement. What will they do with that time? One thing is for sure: most of them want to find something meaningful. This book lays out the choices to be made to find fulfillment in the encore years of life.

Launch Your Encore is a game plan for life after one's main-act career. Hans Finzel and Rick Hicks show boomers how to enter this new stage of life poised for personal satisfaction and contributions to society. They offer tested advice on finding new life potential and thriving in these later decades of life. With real-life examples of people who have made the transition from full-time work to volunteering, ministry, or even second careers, Launch Your Encore shows boomers how to make an impact later in life.

    SUMMARY:

As Baby Boomers enter retirement more active than previous generations, many must decide what to do with their time. Helping readers discover how to make the next years the best years, Launch Your Encore steps through life after careers, choices which must be made while finding purpose and meaning in life, all coupled with personal stories and examples of people already launched. Everyone eventually grows older and retires but not everyone is ready when the time comes

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

Retirement? Though more than a few years away, there is no time like the present to plan and save for it. With lots of time suddenly available, those moments must be filled so life can be enjoyed. Whether that time includes a second career, volunteering, mission work or striving to reach a goal, retirement will be what we make of it. I appreciated the ideas as I consider my own encore . I think readers will pull different aspects out of this book depending on their place in life. Definitely thought-provoking.

Retirement? What to do with all that extra time now that theres no job filling the hours and the kids are grown? Kick back and relax for starters, but pretty soon, as these authors point out, that gets old and major boredom sets in. This book takes a look at precisely this issue within a culture that thrives on doing rather than being, on youthfulness rather than age. What will you do? What will you become? What will become of you?

In the final analysis those questions probably need answers sooner than later. Finzel and Hicks suggest a way forward through the transition period from leaving your lifes work to entering your encore performance, i.e. the retirement years. Personality, ability, desires, skills, and other traits point you toward a decision area. They suggest several assessment tools to help gather that information. Coasting through the twenty or so years after retirement isnt a good option according to these authors and their research cited.

So who is the target audience for this book? The Boomer generation may find some helpful ideas, but they are living it now. My thought is the primary reader of this book probably needs to be the generations that followed the Boomers. The reason for a book like this stems from the extended years and improved health that are now possible after retirement. But will that group buy into this book? If they are smart, and they are, I think so.

I recommend this book as a good start point for the transition period the Boomers have entered and for those that will plan that far in advance for their move into retirement when their time arrives.

I received this book from the publishers in exchange for a review.
