We hear all the time that today's youngsters are getting too much screen time; add up all the time spent watching tv, playing games on their devices, and searching the web, and it becomes hours daily. Just what the effect of all that electronic time has on their minds and bodies is not totally known, but I believe kids needs lots more physical activity and creative play. Now I sometimes appreciate that a tablet, smart phone, or a portable dvd player can be a life saver, especially when kids are on long car rides, at dr. appointments or other places where movement is restricted. My older granddaughters are quite crafty, but sometimes you just can't pack up all those artsy supplies and take them with you. When I was given an opportunity to review Rob Elliott's LAUGH OUT LOUD POCKET DOODLES FOR GIRLS and the male version LAUGH OUT LOUD POCKET DOODLES FOR BOYS, I was intrigued. How would the two books differ? And how do jokes and doodles go together. I had previously reviewed one of his joke books and then gifted it to my grandson, then 9. If you don't know, there is a short time period when jokes and riddles are really popular with boys that age. From the jokes, my grandson was telling us on Sunday, they have stayed popular with him. Our granddaughter, a year younger than this grandson, is really into drawing, so I figured the doodling part of these titles would appeal to her. So how did Rob Elliott and illustrator Jonny Hawkins do? I think both books are a success. Like the title says, the books are little -- just a little larger than a note card. On each page is a joke, a partial drawing which relates to the joke, and directions about what the child should draw to finish the doodle.

In the boy's book, for example, I like the joke,"What kind of bugs like to sneak up on you?" Answer: Spy-ders. On the page is a spider in dark glasses and the instructions tell the child to draw an object that the "spy-der" is hiding behind. A partially drawn oven with the door open accompanies this joke in the girl's book. "How do you know if there is a bear in your oven?" Answer:The oven door won't close. The child is instructed to finish the scene with the bear in the oven. I think that these books could creatively entertain kids from 7-12. Whether kids younger than 7 will get the riddles and jokes really depends on the kid. That the books are small has advantages and disadvantages. I could easily toss both of these in my purse, and so could moms. They would not take much room in backpacks or could be slipped into a cubby/pocket in the car or van. The main disadvantage is that the pages are small, so the drawings must be small. As I looked through both books, there is a definite difference in the jokes and drawing tasks-- ones that seems to be more "male" and ones that are more "female." While I am not in favor of always gender slotting toys and games, I've worked with enough grade school girls and boys when I was their librarian to know that the jokes they find funny and the things they just naturally doodle are different. I received both books from Revell Reads for my honest review.

Fair warning . . . there's a whole lot of cheese dripping from these books. But who doesn't love cheese?!! We have had so much fun with the Laugh Out Loud books at our house. The new Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodles take that fun to a whole new level.

In this new series of books the zany humor of Rob Elliott mixes with the whimsical doodles of Jonny Hawkins and combine to create hours of fun for kids of all ages. Yes the jokes are silly but that is the total charm of it. We all enjoyed snatching the books up and entertaining our friends and family with these clean jokes.

I have now added them to our car box because they are just perfect for road trips. I also added some colored pencils to use on the doodles. This provided hours of entertainment on our last excursion. The books are small enough that you could easily tuck them in your purse for times when you find yourself waiting at an appointment.

If you have a favorite kiddo in your life you should get them a copy. You won't regret it . . . I promise!

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

My husband and I don't get to go on dates very often, but we recently had an at-home date night with these books.

Of course if we are going to do doodles, we need to eat noodles. We ended up titling this date our "Doodle Noodle Date Night Delight" (because we like rhyming like that).

These little books were meant for kids, but my husband and I had a lot of fun with them! Each page includes a doodling prompt, with part of the doodle drawn and the rest left to your imagination. There are also jokes to go along with each page, which I think kids would find really fun! Sheesh, we found them fun. The joke for my page was "Q. What did the alien say to the flower bed? A. Take me to your weeder." Ha!

I had seen books like these before, but I wasn't crazy about some of the drawing prompts that were included (involving witches, ghosts, etc.), so I was so excited to see these books were produced by Revel, a Christian publisher. I have flipped through the books a couple times, and the one for girls has one prompt with a fairy, and one with a monster/fairy godmother, and the one for boys has a page with a skeleton. Those were the most iffy pages I found, most of the pages involve funny animals and situations. I feel more comfortable letting my kids use these books when they get bigger than any other doodle books I've seen.

I would probably recommend these books for kids at least 7 and up, and maybe just take out the iffy pages if your younger kids would be bothered by them. I think kids who are in upper elementary would have the most fun with these! I am planning on hanging on to them until the kids get bigger - they would be great for road trips! At least if Derek and I don't fill them up by then...

We had a lot of fun eating dinner and laughing about our doodles, and we decided we will most definitely be doing this date again with the Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodle books! Who says doodle books are just for kids?

Note: I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for this review. This is my honest opinion.

What a wonderful surprise! Good clean fun, entertainment for kids! This book is just the right size to take anywhere anytime. It fits in the palm of my hand, so I know it is easy for a child to carry. All you need is a pencil, but if you want to bring crayons or markers that would be a bonus. I suggest a pencil so if the child wants to re-do a part; they can erase and start over.

My mind is spinning with ideas for this book! Great for keeping your children or grandchildren entertained on trips, waiting for appointments, waiting rooms, running errands (which kids hate!), when you are in a meeting with another adult, and there is nothing for the kids to do. The possibilities are endless as there are many times and places you need something for kids to pass the time quietly. I love the fact it is something that will spark imagination and creativity. Better yet it is something OTHER THAN an electronic device. It will also make a wonderful gift, and because of how wholesome the content it can be used for door prizes or gifts in your church!

It is suggested for kids 9 12 but I see it working for ages 5 80! Children love silly jokes and riddles. This book is packed with 220 of them. Each page shares a riddle/joke. Below it is the answer. There are illustrations that are not completely finished. A suggestion is given on how the child can finish the picture. Be prepared as they will not only want to share their pictures with you but also read you the jokes! For getting a few extra miles out of the book, the children can color the pictures and then save the book to have their very own personalized joke book to enjoy over and over.

This book is designated for girls but boys will enjoy it just as much. Hours of fun and amusement! Buy more than one so the kids can do new illustrations for the jokes. One time around will not be enough!

Laugh Out Loud is more than just a joke book. Each page has a joke, but each page also allows your child to draw part of the joke. If your child loves jokes they'll love this book AND if your child loves to draw they'll love this book. Nice paperback compact size that will travel well in the car, plane or train while your traveling. Hours of fun. I used it during my summer school teaching sessions when I needed a few extra minutes to fill. I just pulled out the book and flipped to a page and read jokes. Very handy for those time fillers. I also set down while waiting to leave for church and read some to my hubby. It is good clean fun for all to enjoy. Just for Girls means just that well... not really. The jokes are more related to girls, but everyone can enjoy them. They are girl subject, things girls might enjoy...animals, flowers, clowns, girlie stuff. Excellent book.
