The Consulting WriterAge: 35-44Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Have You Seen My Joy? My Almond Joy?January 23, 2018The Consulting WriterAge: 35-44Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5So what's the deal with Candace Payne? She's a stay at home mom who happened to become an overnight sensation due to video gone viral of her revealing a special toy: a Chewbacca mask. Filled with glee, Candace laughs wholeheartedly for several minutes. This isn't a superficial, fake laugh. It's a full belly laugh. She clearly is having fun. And yes, she got her 15 minutes of fame, but she took it one step further. She's now written a book and I'm currently attending the online Bible study entitled "Defiant Joy".
Candace is a down to Earth mom whose history of multiple moves and financial struggles have made her into the grateful and joyful woman she is today. In Laugh It Up! she shares the decision she'd made as a child that, even though happiness was fleeting, to always find the joy, despite tough moments in life. When I first saw the video, her laughter was contagious. But then I saw a list of other videos from the Jimmy Kimmel show to James Cordon, and I began to wonder if all this unexpected fame had changed her. That's not the impression I get from this book. Candace is taking that fleeting moment of fame and using it for God's glory and purpose.
I'm naturally pessimistic. I call myself a "realist". The point is, I'm not bubbling over with laughter and joy. In fact, joy typically takes middle or back seat often. When I make dinner, my catchphrase is, "I apologize in advance" because I assume it'll be awful. So many it rare is, but still...that's the type of person I am. When this book came up for review, I snatched up the opportunity to not only read it but also to get involved in the Bible study. She gives us homework?! Ok, according to Candace, it's "funwork", but still. #1 on the list is to go a day without complaining or arguing.
Yeah. I failed by the time dinner was done. I only realized I was grumbling as I was washing the dishes.
Life punches us all in the gut from time to time. Some a lot more than others. And it truly amazes me, those that have gone through so much, that still exude that joy. Dive into this book to find ways to spark joy in your life. As Christians, we really should be joyful. Seriously! We have the joy of sharing the good news. For anyone struggling to maintain their joy, I highly recommended this simple and entertaining look at how we might increase our joy in life. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: Female3 Stars Out Of 5Encouraging memoir, not spiritual in natureDecember 4, 2017bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: FemaleQuality: 3Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3Payne placed a live video on Facebook that went viral and is the most viewed to date. Because of that, she became somewhat of a sensation. She reveals her life story in this memoir.
Payne is pretty much the kind of person to whom many can relate. She's over weight, struggled with her self concept when young, was a promiscuous teen, has had marital difficulties, has fought depression, etc. Her life story could be any of ours. She would have been one of a million moms and wives except for her video.
Payne's book is an encouragement for all of us. She wants us to be real, not hiding behind a mask. She wants us to fight for joy as that has sustained her through her life events. She wants us to get rid of the "can'ts" and "shoulds" and be authentic.
The millions of people who have viewed her Chewbacca Mom video will enjoy getting to know the person behind the laughter. For me, never having seen the video, I appreciated this memoir but was not amazed by it. I didn't think it was very funny and never laughed while reading it. I did appreciate her honesty about her life experiences. My biggest disappointment is that Payne never wrote about the true source of joy. She had a good opportunity with her moments of fame to reveal Jesus as her ultimate source of joy and strength but did not.
I recommend this book to those who have seen her Facebook video and want to know more about her.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Icon Media. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Jessica Ham5 Stars Out Of 5The Laugh Heard 'Round The InternetNovember 7, 2017Jessica HamQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5When I first saw the FB live viral video of Chewbacca Mom Candace Payne laughing infectiously after putting on a Chewbacca mask she bought instead of yoga pants, I was hooked. I know how frustrating it can be to shop for fitness clothes and turn up empty. So when she turned that into a moment of Simple Joy instead of pure frustration, I knew I needed to follow her. In her book, Laugh It Up, she reveals so much of her life and her struggles and how she has found joy in the midst of it all. This is not only her story, but can be yours too as she reveals the wisdom she has found as she searched for joy in the midst of the good and bad in life. This is an uplifting book that offers some real, practical advice on joy- not happiness- but real joy that can laugh even in the midst of pain and hardship.
