Product Description

In Lament for a Son, well-known philosopher Nicholas Wolterstorff writes not as a scholar but as a loving father grieving the loss of his son. In brief vignettes he explores with a moving honesty and intensity, all the facets of his experience of this irreversible loss. A profoundly faith-affirming book, this book gives eloquent expression to a grief that is at once unique and universal - a grief for an individual, irreplaceable person.

Publisher's Description

To those who are left behind, the death of a friend or family member is a beginning as much as an end. For the author of this book, who lost his 25-year-old son Eric in a mountain climbing accident, it meant the start of a long, unwanted journey to come to terms with his grief -- and the "unanswered questions" of his wounded spirit. Lament for a Son avoids easy answers about suffering. Its honest depiction of one man's struggle will help open the floodgates for those who cannot find words for their own pain.

Henri J. M. Nouwen

A true gift to those who grieve and those who, in love, reach out to comfort.

Walter Wangerin

Wolterstorff inquires us Job inquired. He is honest and utterly resistant to cheap answers about death...and to any answers at all...He looks, without foolish giddiness or delusion, but in faith, to the day that Death shall be overcome -- and he takes his place beside all who suffer. A miracle.

I found the book to be a very open and honest description of what loss feel like for a man after the loss of his son. I am currently going through a very similar experience and found the book very comforting.

I have had this book in my personal library for years and find it a very helpful reminder of the pain parents have at the loss of a child--no matter how old the parent or the child. I bought more to give to parents who grieve--for them it is a very difficult read, most pages bring tears, but it lets them know they are not alone, their pain is understood by others.

This book has been God-sent to me as I continue to grieve and grapple with the issues of untimely death, God, and life hereafter. My 34 yr. old son's death is only seven weeks out and still very raw; this book has stood out above others I have read in understanding and exposing the anguish I feel in my heart. The authenticity with which the author raises questions, and his inability to have answers for some of them shows both mortality and honesty. I have read this book two times and will read it again. I plan to gift my family and friends with "Lament For a Son" that they might better understand my loss, my "amputation" from the death of my precious adult son.

Nicholas bears his heart and pain in this journal. He gave words to my personal grief. I have found myself quoting many of his quotes. This book was a blessing to me and also to my teenage daughter who read it after the tragic loss of our 19 year old daugher and sister.
