This novel is remarkably well written. The characters are realistic and easy to sympathize with, and the narration has a poetic gracefulness about it that brings to mind such authors of classics as Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. While it is clear from the first pages of this novel that a vast amount of research was done, the information gathered is worked into the novel seamlessly. The one glaring flaw occurs in the final decision Charlottes character makes in regard to her child. Without giving anything away, the phrasing of her explanation seems incredibly cold and clashes with the maternal love she has displayed throughout the novel.
This novel is by no means a cookie-cutter love story. Whereas the ending is a happy one, it doesnt go for the corny or a quick-fix of the characters problems. The characters have depth, and the story is both inspiring and true to the pains of life. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance, but wants more than a boy meets girl, boy gets girl story. -- Shannon Potelicki, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
Little Miss Bookworm4 Stars Out Of 5A Regency historical romance filled with angst . . .February 23, 2017Little Miss BookwormQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Julie Klassens debut novel Lady of Milkweed Manor, is a bittersweet historical romance set in Regency England. Charlotte Lamb undergoes a heart-wrenching journey as she tries to reinvent herself in an unforgiving society. Charlottes wounded soul and Daniel Taylors secret torment makes their unconventional relationship unique. A combination of historical detail, a realistic plot, and Klassens elegant prose gives the story a well-balanced depth. Intricate subplots filled with angst, keep a reader in suspense. Elements of Jane Austens Persuasion and Charlotte Bronts Jane Eyre are also infused into the story. None of the secondary characters overshadow Charlottes difficult journey with their own personal struggles. A plot twist at the end is both surprising and deeply moving. Sacrificial love is poignant throughout the novel and readers will love Klassens fresh approach to Regency romance.
MEKA5 Stars Out Of 5Lady of Milkweed Manor by Julie KlassenDecember 17, 2016MEKAQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I always eagerly anticipate Julie's next novel . . . in fact, I might say a bit impatiently! :-) I am an avid reader having very few favorite authors. Ms. Klassen is definitely in the top three under that banner!
I am almost finished reading LOMM for a second time, this being the only book to read twice in all my years of reading historical romance! It's positively as interesting on the second go-around! Her latest offering was released this week; I'm anxious to finish this and begin a new adventure through excellent writing!
Natacharamos913 Stars Out Of 5Very unique plotline, but it didn't keep interestedOctober 16, 2016Natacharamos91Quality: 3Value: 0Meets Expectations: 2What a journey! Its a very unique story with lots of twists in it.
At first, I was really captivated by the singularity of the plotline and the circumstances our main characters were when they met again, but I thought: there is no way this can work for them.
I could see the Regency Period through new eyes, because, really, Im used to the nice side of it: elegance, balls, ladies, gentlemen, drawing rooms, and so on; but this book taught a bit of how it was like not be wealthy in that time, or to be pregnant but not married. It was interesting, I learned a lot!
Also, it was really good to grow with the characters, they went through a lot, and the reader with them.
However, I must say my interest went down when I reached about 33% of the book, but Im not sure why. I think it might be because the events changed so fast that it was hard for me to really connect to what was happening, and I feel the characters themselves didnt catch up very easily either, because they acted as if some twists hadnt affected them at all.
There are some decisions characters made I couldnt understand, because they seemed so incongruent to their personalities and purposes in life that it was obvious to me they did it only to force the story to be something it wouldnt have been otherwise, which is not good. Plus, I did not like how easy everything got solved at the end.
Its very good story, unique and all. It taught me a great deal, but I couldnt be drawn in as much as I had been in the beginning.
SqwigglesCaliforniaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Heartbreaking and Beautiful StoryJanuary 14, 2015SqwigglesCaliforniaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleThis book is a gem. It's not the normal happy romance novel. This book is deep and powerful and it will move you. I could feel Charlotte's pain with the decisions that she had to make. It was heartbreaking and yet beautiful at the same time. This story isn't just about love between a man and a woman, but it is also the love story between a mom and her child. Charlotte made some choices that sent her on a difficult path in life. As humans we all make the wrong choice sometimes and things will get difficult, but we must keep living and try to make things better for ourselves. This story will touch your heart in many ways. As sad as the story was, it also had happy moments and made me smile. It was well written and a beautiful story that I had a hard time putting down. You will love Charlotte as well as some of the other characters. I would easily recommend this book.
