I am a big fan of Julie Klassen and attempt to read her novels as soon as they release, knowing that her books never disappoint. I must say I particularly loved this novel, and it has risen, in my mind, as one of her best works. It is difficult to specifically say what it is I loved about this book for there is a fair amount of mystery throughout the novel that I would hate to give away, but suffice it to say that the characters are so well written that their sins and their faults, although perhaps not exactly similar to my own sins, nonetheless drew me in because the feelings of remorse and regret are not unlike what I experience when I disappoint God. I absolutely loved the theme of forgiveness in the novel and the never-ending grace of God. I think readers need to realize that women in the early 1800s faced a much different world than the one we face today; not excusing, perhaps, all the sins of the protagonists, but certainly allowing a certain understanding for this particular reader. The scenes are so beautifully told, the romance so achingly unexpected, the characters so broken and healed, and the plot so mysterious and surprising, with twists and turns that made it most difficult to put the book down. It is impossible, I think, not to fall in love with the characters and identify yourself with even small fragments of their pain, love, and difficult choices. It is true that some romantic scenes may be more detailed than Julies earlier works, but I did not think them too graphic for Christian fiction. I most highly recommend this novel.

Wow! What a ride! There are so many twists and turns in this book that I feel like I've been on a wild roller coaster ride. Lady Maybe is a book filled with bad choices, betrayal, and treachery. It clearly shows the consequences of these. However, there is also forgiveness and love. The book opens with Lady Marianna Mayfield getting ready to leave Bath for a place unknown to her. Her husband, Sir John, doesn't want anyone to know where they are going, so hopefully her lover, Anthony Fontaine, will not follow. Lady Mayfield's former companion, Hannah Rogers, returns just that day to collect some funds due her (she had left without word several months earlier). Lady Mayfield talks Hannah into traveling with them. Almost to their destination, there is a terrible storm and their coach goes over a cliff into the river. Only two people are saved and both are "insensible" for a period of time. They are near enough to Sir John's home to be taken there, where we meet kind Dr. Parrish, his snooty wife, their son Edgar, and the housekeeper, dear Mrs. Turrill (one of my favorite characters). A little later, add a baby, his depressed wet nurse, and a suspicious solicitor to the mix.

And, is the Lady Mayfield that was saved, the real Lady Mayfield? What will happen if she is not?

I read LADY MAYBE all in one day, finishing about midnight. I was tired and ready to sleep but my mine was so full of the happenings in this book (especially the very satisfying ending) my mind wouldn't settle down for quite awhile. I woke this morning again with my head full of this book. Readers of Regency romance with some suspense will adore LADY MAYBE. i highly recommend it.

I have enjoyed Julie Klassen's writing in the past but this was a disappointing read in content.

The storyline held a few surprises but not all that unpredictable. What I did not predict was the author's choices in the handling of faith and relationships.

I don't expect good choices by the characters in Christian fiction (because isn't that where grace and growth happen?) but I don't expect bad choices to be rewarded.

Descriptions of intimacy were surprising (and not in a good way).

References to faith were minimal and seemed forced (e.g. God will forgive you but character didn't seem that contrite) and limited to a few characters.

This one is not on my to-recommend list. I must admit more hesitancy in purchasing future Klassen novels.

Hannah Rogers is desperate to get her son back. She was forced to live in a home for unwed mothers and after giving birth, her son was basically held hostage until she could afford to pay for his care. The landlord, however, keeps raising the rates. Hannah is forced to go back to the Mayfield home and ask for her job back to earn the necessary money to retrieve her son. While on a journey to the country with the Mayfields, they are in a carriage accident. While recovering from injuries, mistakes are made entrapping Hannah. She knows she is doing wrong, but how else can she get her son back? While contemplating that situation, she is also trying to sort out her feelings for two men. She might set one free only to discover the other man holds no love for her.

Negatives: Please be aware that the publisher for this book is not Bethany House, who has previously published some of this authors books. This is not a Christian publisher and that is evident in some of the content of the story. The intimate scenes are more descriptive than in her other novels and add nothing to the storyline. The infidelity of characters in the book is just too much. There are a few brief references to God by Hannah, but not like in the authors other stories where faith is more evident in the main characters.

Positives: The description of this time period seemed spot on to me, and it is a period I enjoy reading about. I liked the writing style of the author. I also liked the one character who did speak of God the most, the housekeeper, Mrs. Turrill. She speaks of Gods ability to forgive any sin; there is no sin that is so great that He cannot forgive. She also shows the love of God to Hannah and Becky. She tells them that God loves them and that they are valuable in His sight. The authors next book will be published by Bethany House, so I am hoping there will be more of a faith focus.
