Probably the best-known history of Joseph Smith and the early days of Mormonism, Fawn M Brodie first published this title back in 1945. This edition was reissued in paperback in 1995.This is an extremely well-researched volume, written over a seven year period by the Professor of History at University of California, Los Angeles.Mrs Brodie has put together a large volume of detailed content. There are a number of old pictures, maps and illustrations plus three appendices covering the Early Life of Joseph Smith, the Spaulding-Rigdon Theory and Joseph Smith's Plural Wives.I feel that Mrs Brodie's book covers various key areas of interest. Latter Day-Saints surely ought to read it out of interest while those who devour history books, religious and secular should welcome it as a publication that will prove to be an eye-opener on this important subject.

I recently purchased this book to dig deeper into the history and life of Mormonism founder and first prophet, Joseph Smith Jr. This book is a real eye-opener. The late Mrs. Brodie did a marvelous job of painting the picture of a man who wrote much about his faith but very little about his own privite life. The book also is an interesting insight into the religious life of many in the early 1800's. You will find the book to not be neither pro nor anti Mormon.
