It's so easy and quick to read! The authors use forty different names for God to reveal Gods character, and in doing so, you really get to know God more personally! By the end of this book, my understanding of God grew immensely!
Each name and the (daily) devotional that follows, is not only a wonderful eye opener, but it really did draw me closer to God. The journaling pages are different from others I have seen, and actually prompted me to do them. I also, really loved how the book offers an pronunciation guide, no more butchering the name! I loved the short prayers at the end of each day (chapter). I'm not very good at praying, and when a book just says, "pray about what you read", I kind of panic, so it's nice having a simple prayer to read.
I feel like this book is a calm thought provoking book. Meaning, it makes you think but not in a overwhelming sort of way. I enjoyed how each day (chapter) listed which author it was written by, it made it very easy to keep track of the stories told. The authors keep all the stories total relevant (no one goes off on a tangent)...all in all, a really nice book.
I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this book review.
Are you looking to get to know God better? This devotional book, Knowing God By Name by Sharon Jaynes, Gwen Smith, and Mary Southerland, will help you get to know Him better. As the subtitle says, "A Girlfriends in God Faith Adventure. When we study and pray and learn more about God, it does become an adventure.
The authors of this book also have a popular website called Girlfriends in God that offer daily devotionals. I have been blessed numerous times reading a devotional. Spoke right to my heart, encouraged me. So I was pretty excited to get my hands on this book by three awesome women of God.
This is an 8-week study of God's Names. At the end of the book, there is a pronunciation guide for those Hebrew names of God. For 5 days will read a short devotional about a specific Name of God. The day starts out with a truth from the Bible.
For example Week 1, Day 1 is called The Creator - Elohim. Sharon Jaynes wrote this devotional. The truth for that day is this: "In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth." - (Genesis 1:1). She goes into some detail about what it means, shows where in the Bible it talks about God the Creator. The entry is about 4-5 pages long. Near the end, she helps you make this more personal. She asks "Why are you here?" She also writes: "Knowing you were created by God and for God confirms that you have great value and great purpose, regardless of how you feel about yourself, regardless of how you came into this world, regardless of what others have said about you in the past. Every human life is sacred, no matter how it began."
It ends with a prayer that you can extend and add your own words to it. You don't need to stop when the written prayer does. God desires to spend time with you. Pick up this book and start learning more about God and falling in love all over again with Him.
On the 6th day is a time of reflection about what you have read during the week. There are questions to answer, a section about going deeper with God, and a place to journal your thoughts. Sometimes there's suggested worship songs to find on YouTube or someplace so that you can spend some time praising our Lord of lords and King of kings. They might also ask you to follow a link to their website.
I read the first two weeks and have been blessed with what I am reading. This would also be good for a ladies Bible study group. Our God is an awesome God.
"I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review."
We talk about God. We think we know Him. We belt out songs with titles like "El Shaddai" and "Adonai." We skim over writings that use names like Yahweh and Abba. We've seen and heard these names so many times we don't even notice them anymore_and the truth is, we may not even have a clue what they mean.
And those are just the "familiar" ones.
God has a multitude of names_each of them referencing yet another awesome aspect of His grace, mercy, love, healing, and power. All the things He does for His people every day, every hour, every moment.
Do you know Him by name? How many? And do those names mean to you what they should? How can you glory in His holy name if you do not know that name?
KNOWING GOD BY NAME, written by the "Girlfriends in God," (Sharon Jaynes, Gwen Smith and Mary Southerland) is an eye-opening, soul-refreshing, heart-stirring look at God's characterââ¬âHis multi-layered "personality" attributes_His astounding mercy and grace and love for us, His children. It's a down-to-earth, easy-to-understand study of those names and what they meanââ¬ânot only by literary definition, but by their purpose in our lives. What a wonderful blessing these ladies have shared with the world! Don't miss your turn at the table. Knowing God by Name will change your world and take your relationship with your Father to a whole new level.
A very enjoyable read that you won't want to go too quickly through. Each short chapter leads with a scripture reference and focuses on one of the names of God found within the Bible. Each chapter is written by one of the three authors who call themselves Girlfriends in God and I found that I liked the different writing styles and personal examples to support the different names of God. They provide specific examples in each chapter to help understand the meaning behind the name of God. Although I was familiar with the name El Shaddai (which means The All-Sufficient One), the example in the book is of a nursing baby who is dependent on the mom for sustenance and nourishment. This image of God as El Shaddai who sustains us and nourishes us has such richer meaning for me now.
The book can be read as an 8 week individual study (and can be perfect for individual devotion time too)or a small group study. Each chapter represents a week with 5 days of reading and then a 6th day of personal reflection and application questions.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for this fair and unbiased review.
I previously posted a review on a Devotional I wasn't totally sold on, this one is so different. I love it. Knowing God by Name is a devotional that is packed full of scripture, spiritual insights and challenge.
Knowing God by Name is written by A Girlfriends in God Faith Adventure. Three ladies that love the Lord, study His Word and apply it to their lives. You don't feel like they are preaching to you or talking down to you but bringing you along on a journey to discover who Jesus is.
There are 8 weeks divided into 6 sections or days. I have been not worrying about the weeks or days, but just going through it day by day. 5 days of each week are Bible Study about a different name of God, where they are found and what can be applied to our lives. The 6th day is called "Now it is your turn." A chance to remember what was taught and study more and apply it more.
I am enjoying reading each of the 3 ladies, different perspectives as each day is written by someone else. It is a well rounded book, doesn't lag and really was what I was looking for. I believe they really sought the Lord on what to say. It is a book that can be used once, put down for awhile and read it again. It can be a devotional, like I am doing, or a Bible Study in a small group. It would be a great Bible study and I might lead one, sometime.
I love learning about the Names of God, revealing His character. If you have a chance to pick this up, don't hesitate it is well worth it.
