This book explains that, plus many other questions that have puzzled Bible readers, such as What did Jesus mean when he told disciples to be "perfect"? This highly readable book is full of delightful little "I never knew that!" items, such as p 217 where I learned that Jesus told his disciples to do deeds that were "beautiful," the Greek word kalos, which the Greeks used to refer to physical beauty, but Jesus was commending a more enduring spiritual beauty. I also learned that in New Testament times, "books" did not exist, that all writing was done on scrolls. These are just a few of the items explaining the world that Jesus and the disciples lived in, and these items help bring the words of Jesus to life.
The Sunday school class that I teach thoroughly enjoyed this book, which we studied over a period of 30 Sundays. The class had adults ranging from 21 to 60, and they all gained a lot from this fine book.
Valerie Hurst5 Stars Out Of 5April 14, 2010Valerie HurstReally neat book, very easy to read, large type and lots of nifty little "tidbit" boxes with insights into the times Jesus lived in. I took the title with a grain of salt, but in fact each chapter would be just enough for one day (assuming you have a job and a life), but I also think it would work great for a Bible study group that wanted to stretch it out over 30 weeks. Each chapter has a Memory Verse and also a Key Term (for example, in the chapter on Jesus' sayings on mercy, the key term if "neighbor." One thing that surprised me (in a good way) was that the author seems to have a sense of humor (you don't find that often in a Bible study), as when he points out that Bible translators occasionally have an easy job--paralytikon in Greek comes out as "paralytic" in English. The book has lots of appendices, and although these seemed to take up a lot of space, now that I thumb through them again, I think these would be of some use in the future, making the book useful as a reference took. I think my favorite chapter was chap 22, in which we see that Jesus had to deal with hostility not only from the Pharisees and priests but even from his own family.
