In her book Do You Know Who I Am? Angela Thomas asks God if He knows her—and ultimately does He love her—as she is, right now, today. In each chapter, she names a different identity issue, such as: “I am invisible,” “I am worn out,” “I am undisciplined,” “I am ordinary,” and “I am afraid to dream.” With each honest admission, Angela teaches that God lovingly replies, “Yes, I know your heart. I see your struggle. Now…do you know who I AM?”
Ultimately Angela reveals that the secret to being known and loved lies in an intimate understanding of who God is. Each identity struggle is answered with a short biblical study on the character of God that assures readers that their personal, spiritual, and eternal fulfillment is not dependent on getting themselves together. Rather, God has a purpose for them just as they are—broken, afraid, disappointed, disillusioned.
Through vivid storytelling, biblical teaching, and practical application, readers will find the heartfelt answers they seek.
Thomas explains that God is the only One who can answer every identity question and also understand every struggle women face because He is their Creator, the great I AM. His many strengths fill each woman's weaknesses, making her complete in Him. Among several other attributes, God is worthy, comforting, sufficient, generous, and He never grows weary.
Thomas writes with an authentic voice and makes a series of biblically sound assertions. As a national speaker and Bible teacher for more than twenty-five years, she is able to communicate complex concepts clearly. Her tone is very conversational, which makes the book easy to read and to apply in daily life.
Each of the twelve chapters begins with a Bible verse and ends with a petition written from the Lord's point of view to explain how His attributes prove He is trustworthy. Throughout the book, Thomas uses a series of personal stories to illustrate her ideas and she frequently quotes Scripture for emphasis. As a once-single mother, a divorced Christian leader, and a patient diagnosed with cancer, she is able to empathize with a variety of readers' needs. Her personal experiences give her credibility and a genuineness.
Overall, Do You Know Who I Am? not only explains the secret struggles of faithful women, but it also explains how they can take action to change and become better believers. It delves into the concept of a Christian woman's identity in Christ, focusing on God's all-knowing nature that surpasses the bounds of human understanding. Thomas approaches difficult questions from a unique point of view and conveys a strong understanding of abstract concepts. I would recommend this book to women of all ages for individual or group study. Kara Hackett, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
“Biblical, real, funny, witty, and life changing. Angela understands a woman’s heart and offers God’s path to freedom through addressing ‘brave questions.’”
“Thank you, Angela, for taking on tough issues women face with sound, biblical teaching. May God continue to guide you as you meet women where they are through your powerful gift of encouragement and unique ability to equip them."
“The title of this book alone penetrates the deepest places in our hearts. Does God know me? But how do I know? Angela walks us through the questions all of us ask ourselves at one time or another, the kinds of thoughts we're too embarrassed to say out loud. Our character is flawed and yet God's is perfect. Is He sure He wants to use me? Be ready to be comforted, to be encouraged, to be strengthened, and to fall into the arms of the Great I Am who gives us more than hope. The real question is: Do I know who God is? No matter where we are in our journey with Christ, self doubt always has a way of entering in. Be reminded of who you are in God's eyes and who God is in your life.”
Christy Lockstein5 Stars Out Of 5Inspiring devotional with hope for women of faithNovember 22, 2010Christy LocksteinQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Do You Know Who I Am by Angela Thomas answers the top twelve questions a woman's heart asks the Lord. Thomas, a popular speaker at women's conferences and churches, as well as an author of ten books, is remarkably honest and open about her struggles with faith and the suffering in her life. She uses each to help women learn more about God and their role as a Christian woman. She asks questions like: Do you know I am invisible; do you know I am trembling inside; do you know I am lonely; do you know I am broken, and then answers them with truths about God: He is my God who sees; he is my comforter; he is here; he is my redeemer. By using the question and answer format, she really gets to the core of many of our fears and worries, and then soothes them by demonstrating how God's nature in each circumstance offers healing and strength. Readers don't need to read the book straight through, but can jump to a specific question that lies heavily on their heart, but at the same time, there is a thread running through each chapter of Thomas' journey through faith and redemption. I enjoyed reading Thomas' writing because she never makes the reader feel guilty for their weaknesses; she is also encouraging and loving. It's a devotional that can be read again and again for deeper understanding.
