Dave5 Stars Out Of 5The Farmer's TreasureAugust 5, 2019DaveI have bought many Bibles, but never an Oxford. I was amazed! The stock, the font size, and style clarity jumped at us. My wife was delighted. The leather is sturdy and the binding was perfect. A brand new book and it immediately laid open flat anywhere in the Bible. I was a printer, and never experienced that. I always purposed to carefully open a few signatures at a time to open the book and then time would allow greater flexibility as the book was read, and reread. I was so impressed, words cannot express the delight I felt when checking this volume. The notes are written by one well respected man, yet still a man. Remember to search God's word foremost.
Another aspect I discovered was . . .
the page edges were not gilded! When ordering, it did not even occur to me to check. What a Blessing that I did not! I will NEVER order a gilded Bible again. The Bible is a reference, a tool for daily living. I did not realize what a hindrance this "frosting" actually is. Most Bibles are either a replacement for a worn out binding, a gift to introduce someone to God's Word, or a student delving deeper in study. I had forgotten how long it takes to split the pages open so a book or chapter can be quickly found in services or private study. Or the frustration of following a reading and stop and split a page remaining stuck. Yes, I know some inexpensive Bibles save the cost of gilding, but with use that Bible wears out quickly.
When purchasing a well made Bible, it will go through years and decades of service, and the gilding will wear off anyways! This table-top or bookshelf ornamentation is worthless. Recognizing the built in deterrent gilding makes for easy access, its absence made this binding all the more delightful to open and find our path to find our saviour and the kingdom of heaven. I felt like the farmer in Matthew 13:44-46. I was so pleased to be able to hand this treasure to my wife. Now I know what pearls Oxford makes for students of God's Word. That knowledge will guide my future purchases and guide my advice to other friends and family. Time and price become distant considerations. Well done. Thank you for letting me discover this.
Kathy3 Stars Out Of 5red ink issueJune 29, 2019KathyQuality: 3Value: 1Meets Expectations: 3The only drawback for this large print Scofield bible kjv is that I would have preferred black text only like they were in the past. Otherwise the bible itself is of good quality paper and binding. I would recommend this bible if a person absolutely prefers the red ink in the new testament words spoken by Christ.
Julian4 Stars Out Of 5Nostalgic about the KJVJune 10, 2019JulianQuality: 5Value: 2Meets Expectations: 5Our Church uses the Revised Common Lectionary, and for good reason; English is a foreign language for most of the congregation. Even for native speakers the King James Version is somewhat opaque but I do love the poetty, rhythm and meter and do like it, espcially at Christmas - a special treet! The only drawback for me was the cost of postage and packing. I would have liked to have had the option of surface mail and time was not of the essence.
Karl Paolini3 Stars Out Of 5DisappointedJune 19, 2018Karl PaoliniQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 2I've studied mainly out of a Scofield since I got save in the 70's, I don't always agree with Scofield's theology but I found his reference system to be outstanding. I decided that I wanted to see if I could pick up a KJ edition like the ones I used in the 70's and go back to basics so-to-speak, this one looked like it would do the trick. In the beginning they say that they have kept Dr. Scofield's notes, nothing added and nothing deleted, that is a lie. (Sorry folks, it is what it is.)
I have a 1984 Scofield Study Bible (NIV) that I also use, the cover is barely hanging on by the grace of packing tape. There are marked differences in the notes, and I don't generally read the notes anymore, but the differences cannot be ignored. My Ryrie Bible's notes also contradicts this new version, so this is not just the imaginary wonderings of a Christian layman (and after well over 40 years of study is one still considered a laymen?).
I wouldn't have bought this edition if I knew the description of it was grossly in error, I would have gone to an old book store and see if an original was available. My disappointment is that I was truly looking forward to stepping back to one's foundational teaching, instead I got an edition that is like a PC Catholic Bible. I would return this if I could.
worshipper5 Stars Out Of 5The Ultimate Bible!May 24, 2018worshipperQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This should be my last Bible purchase; but it won't... This is The Bible of all Bibles. Great Thoughts and work went into the construction of this fine Treasure chest... I have many Bibles, and would have had many more, had I not ran into so many Bible paupers. I have been giving myself a Bible every Birthday for many years, besides purchases throughout the year; obeying Proverbs 7:3 Keep them at your fingertips and write them in your mind... I have Bibles everywhere in my home; in seating areas wherever a hand can reach, in the bathrooms, on the kitchen counter, while I cook; on the exercise equipment, also in my car... So many Bibles, nowhere else to place them; from time to time I go to the shelf and read through the others... Yes from 14yrs old it became my addiction, and I am almost 60yrs... Scofield, Dakes, Thompson chain, Ryrie, etc. This Bible by far superseded my expectation... The Font is a plus for mile aged eyes, The reference notes, The sacred feel and "Awe" sends my appetite into overdrive. The size is fine to carry around; if one can carry around a laptop, one can this. It is smaller... For the record, my Dakes Bible will always be my old reliable...
