A Classic Edition of KJV - Always Useful
    June 19, 2017
    Quality: 0

    Meets Expectations: 0
Unlike other editions of the KJV, this one from the 19th century is never likely to be obsolete for usefulness due to its fine Greek and Hebrew system for grammar, unless one quibbles over minor textual notes in the NT. Even there these were done when most of the oldest manuscripts were known. It is one of the few KJV Bibles that gives details of the manuscripts, and not just Alexandrian, but Majority and others as well, all labeled as to source. Plus it is the complete KJV original text unmodified and the small markings are not intrusive.

John Richie LTD have done a very nice job. I was surprised and impressed with the overall quality for the price. The gold over red edges are not seen too much anymore, a nice touch. A few special additions that even the original did not have are very nice. A small two page biography and tribute to Thomas Newberry, plus new all color charts and doctrinal information in the back. The only objection here is that I would like to see more maps of detail on Bible geography since many charts take their place. There are also a few new charts elsewhere in the text such as Paul's life and timeline between the Gospels and Acts.

I have all three editions, the Portable, Pocket and this one, the Single Column Large Print. Interestingly they all have differences that make them useful, but the Portable is the most compromised since it has fewer and not complete textual details at the bottom of the NT and it also lacks some of the emendation notes in the margin and some cross references for some reason. The Portable edition actually appears to be the last one released or else it was updated at some point. It actually has some margin notes and cross references that are not in the Large Print edition as well as what appears to be some corrections and clarifications that I can compare. It does however lose the paragraphing for normal verse numbering and is double column. It also has a simplified Hebrew and Greek language markings and no textual notes in the NT.

The Large Print edition is the best, this one from Ritchie is very nice, and this is a KJV that should be kept in print and considered by serious Bible students. I love my copy!

Great Bible at a Great Price
    May 28, 2017

The valuable Newberry Reference Bible (also known as the Englishman's Bible) was edited by the Plymouth Brethren author Thomas Newberry and originally published in three different editions: Portable Edition in two columns (1875), Single Column Large Print in one column (1890), and Pocket Edition in verse format in double columns (1890?).

The single column large print Newberry Bible is the best edition of the three. It is my Bible of choice because it is the best English Bible I know that brings out the riches of the original Hebrew and Greek languages plus offers various manuscript renderings while using the Authorized Version. The paper quality of the Ritchie edition is not top-of-the line (thin paper), but for the price, one cannot complain.
