Product Description

The year 2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the creation of the King James Bible, arguably the greatest piece of English Literature ever produced. King James had an uncanny love of beautiful things, including language to stir the soul. With several inferior English translations in use across the Kingdom, the Puritan leader John Rainolds took his opportunity to suggest that a new, more accurate translation was needed for the people. With the new king’s blessing, a committee of 47 professors began the daunting task of creating a translation that was accurate, acceptable to all, and beautiful enough for the king! While Shakespeare's rich language lit up the stage, this committee penned a beautiful translation that would eventually bring new life to the churches.
Award-winning director Jerry Griffith doesn’t disappoint as he brings to life the fascinating history of this great work, along with its impact for us today. KJV: The Making of the King James Bible brings us right into the heart of the translation process through specific passage examples. While exploring the varying viewpoints of the different scholars, we get a firsthand look at the immense attention to detail they used. This presentation gives us a renewed appreciation for the sacred scriptures and their place in our homes and churches.

This DVD did very little to explain how the KJV Bible was actually translated from the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. In fact, I kept waiting for the time when it would, but instead the first half was nothing but a history of the political struggle of 15th century Europe and the Christian church denominations who all had their own ideas of what Bible was correct. Even when we got past that, nothing about how the actual "making of the ...Bible" was addressed. As a Bible student and teacher I felt it left a lot to be desired, but for my students, I felt it was too deeply involved in irrelevant material.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Jerry Griffith
Located in: Fairfax, VA
Submitted: September 13, 2010

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a freelance filmmaker, having spent the last 20 years doing a broad range of projects, mostly in industrial and training video. This is the fourth, and in my opinion the best full length documentary I have written and produced.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I want to connect Christain people with their heritage, and an understanding of what has gone into creating a version of The Bible that is so powerful it has moved and inspired people for 400 years.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  A sense of the many ways The Bible impacts a our lives, not only in terms of faith and salvation, but also with regard to beauty and comfort.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I have gained a much deeper understanding of the power and beauty of the words of the KJV. And also realized how much more there is to learn. I've also come to believe that reading the Bible is like exercise: sometimes it's hard work, and that often means you are getting something out of it.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Ward Allen, a retired English professor at Auburn University explained a lot about reading by words instead of by eyefulls. As a filmmaker - well, of course Ken Burns is an inspiration as was PBS filmmaker Juan Williams.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I think the world needs more educational materials for Christians that acknowledge the intelligence and education of the faithful. I truly hope this work leaves the viewers more inspired and educated.
