2 Kings: The Power and the Fury
November 29, 2016
All of Dale Davis' commentaries are filled with sound exegesis and practical applications--plus his witty writing style makes them a real joy to read. I have preached through I,II Samuel, I,II Kings, and Joshua, and each one of his commentaries has been incredibly helpful. Every conservative pastor and Bible teacher will find this work on 2 Kings to be an immediate favorite in message preparation.
I am using 2 Kings by Dale Davis because it was recommended by R.C. Sproul as being the best commentary in his opinion. He was not wrong. In fact, after teaching a bible study class using as a reference Dale Davis' 1 Kings, I am teaching 2 Kings in a bible study for women and I couldn't wait to delve into the continuing saga of early Israel in 2 Kings. This commentary brings to life the tempestuous, idolatrous, tempestuous and assasination-filled times of Israel and Judah. We also see God's redemptive and forgiving nature all through 1 and 2 Kings, our need to be obedient to Yahweh's word for our own good and the consequences of failure to heed what he ordains for us. Add the analogies he provides using contemporary situations and the humor he injects (I can't tell you how many laughs I get when I quote one of Davis' titles or descriptions) and you have a commentary that is exciting to read.
