Where have all the disciples gone?
There is a missing force in Christianity today. Its a critical one, and its absence has led to weak believers, disintegrating families, ineffective churches, and a decaying culture. Without it, we lack what we need to fully live as heavens representatives on earth.
That missing force is discipleship. In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans outlines a simple, actionable definition of discipleship to help the church fulfill its calling. Readers will learn:
- What a disciple is
- What a disciple cares about
- How to be a disciple and make disciples
- What discipleship looks like in community
- What the impact of discipleship on the world can be
Kingdom disciples are in short supply, and the result is a legion of powerless Christians attending powerless churches, having a powerless presence in the world. The power, authority, abundance, victory, and impact God has promised will only come about when we understand and align ourselves with His definition of discipleship.
Kingdom Disciples calls believers and churches back to our primary, divinely ordained responsibility to be disciples and make disciples. Only when we take seriously this assignment will the world see heaven at work on earth.
Will you accept the assignment?
Kingdom Disciples isuseful as base material for a course on discipleship.

Whilst looking for a book on discipleship I came across this book by Tony Evans and decided to read it after reading the description-it did not disappoint. I fear discipleship is neglected in the church today. Few churches point their focus in producing true disciples of Christ and making the Great Commission a priority. But discipleship is not only important but a command and a mark of true faith in our lives.
In "Kingdom Disciples" Dr. Evans addresses discipleship in 3 parts: The Foundation of Kingdom Discipleship, The Formation of Kingdom Discipleship, and The Function of Kingdom Discipleship. He explains what discipleship means and personal application using the Scriptures for examples. Dr. Evans also goes on to explain how a true disciple is to make more disciples and the church's role in discipleship.
I like this quote from the book:
"One mark of a person who wants to follow Christ, one absolute necessity for being His disciple, is to be His witness and testimony in all you do."
I recommend this book for those who are looking to learn what discipleship is all about. Dr. Evans has done a great work in presenting this material in a well- rounded way that covers any question you may have about the topic.
I received a copy from Moody in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Lisa - The Merry Momma5 Stars Out Of 5You will not walk away the same after reading this book!September 25, 2017Lisa - The Merry MommaQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I have long been a fan of Dr. Evans and his books. So when an opportunity arose to receive a free copy of his newest book, Kingdom Disciples, in exchange for a review, I jumped at the chance!
It was everything I've come to expect from Dr. Evans and more. All the books in his Kingdom series (and I've read all but one) are fantastic, and inspire readers to view all of life through a Kingdom lens. This latest book is a practical overview of discipleship, and it teaches what a disciple is, what a disciple should do, and how to make disciples of others. It is highly informative, but also deeply inspiring and even challenging at times.
In Dr. Evans' typical straight-forward-yet-loving fatherly way, he spoke straight to my heart, his words piercing right through all the selfish, fearful, complacent muck that had built up around it.
I will warn you, if you're looking for a feel-good book that you can passively consume and walk away from filled with warm tinglies, then this is not the book for you. If, however, you are desiring to deepen your faith and get serious about living out the call of God in your life, then this is an absolute must-read. You will not read this book and want to live life the same self-seeking, self-interested way you've been living it, I can assure you. Rather, you will see that our lives are to be lived for more than just ourselves, and that discipleship is a life that God has called all of his children to embrace.
R. Evington4 Stars Out Of 5Are you a disciple of Jesus?July 15, 2017R. EvingtonQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Curious why Christianity seems so powerless in our culture? Interested in learning more about discipleship? Need to be motivated to make disciples? This is your book! It will fire you up to change the world through Jesus Christ!
I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Evans' premise. The point of the book is that kingdom disciples are in short supply and that too many Christians are professing in name only without the power and authority of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Section 3 was my favorite and it fleshes out what kingdom discipleship looks like individually, in the family, and in the church.
This book dispels positive Christian cliches and "name it and claim it" theology, instead proving from Jesus's own words that discipleship comes at a cost but that the cost is well worth paying for our Savior and Lord.
I rated it at 4 stars instead of 5 only because it was a heavy read for me (even though I noticed some others said it was an easy read for them). I had to read some sections several times to really digest the material. Additionally, the first chunk of the book is spent convincing the reader that many professing Christians aren't kingdom disciples. My guess is that most people who are interested in this book are already convinced of that.
Overall, this book gives a great definition of kingdom disciples and encourages readers to be Heaven's representatives on Earth. I recommend it!
LyndaH5 Stars Out Of 5True DiscipleshipJuly 13, 2017LyndaHQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Kingdom Disciples is an important book, with an urgent message for modern American Christians and any believer who longs to experience the victorious life. Dr. Evans gives a challenging and convicting perspective, one that is both life-altering and life-giving Any believer who is discouraged, and who questions Jesus's promise of abundant life, will find answers in this book. However, Dr. Evans does not sugar-coat the way to get there.
He calls out his readers from their comfort and shows us what trusting Jesus truly looks like. At times his message brings a sense of unwelcome uneasiness, but his words direct us to life. Dr. Evans points out that too many of us desire the benefits of associating with Jesus without the inconveniences of being true followers, or kingdom disciples. We want the perks of being spiritual without having to forsake the secular, but as Dr. Evans tells us, following Jesus is an all or nothing commitment. A kingdom disciple will surrender to his lordship in every area of life, at all times. Too many of us want Jesus only as Savior, too few see him as Lord.
This book lends a more acute awareness of what it means to be a kingdom disciple. We are not to be "secret agent" followers, but we are commanded to exercise authority in our world. Dr. Evans invites us to imagine the radical changes we would see in our communities and our homes if we were to fully live in this authority in every realm of our lives. However, "The power, authority, abundance, victory, and impact promised in God's Word to His own will be ours only when we understand and align ourselves with His definition of discipleship. Until then, we can anticipate that disappointments and losses will be the norm in spite of all the Christian activities we engage in." (p16)
There is much richness and truth contained in this book, and it was hard to absorb it all in one reading. However, the common thread through the entire book was one of love . . . love for God and love for people. It is this love that gives life and sets us ablaze. Thank you Dr. Evans for lending your fire to help reignite the smoldering flames of this reader. I pray many kingdom disciples will have the courage to come out of hiding as the Spirit leads, using this powerful book.
Michelle4 Stars Out Of 5God Calls Us to DiscipleJuly 13, 2017MichelleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans calls us to a deeper commitment to God as we sacrifice ourselves and commit fully to Him. He says that a kingdom disciple should aim to replicate Gods kingdom values in the lives of others. He explains how sacrifice is needed but that true surrender leads to freedom from worry. This book is full of gems like this to digest slowly and it is well worth reading. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
