Product Description

Sarah Yoder is learning to help the people in her Amish community as a Dokterfraa, creating teas and tinctures using the herbs she grows. But her latest patient seems to have a problem that can't be resolved with anything in Sarah's garden-a woman who, in Sarah's mind, would flourish anywhere but in the place she lives. Meanwhile, Sarah's relatives have decided to do a little matchmaking between her and a visiting Amish man. He would make a wonderful husband, and she knows she should be willing for God to show her His choice of partner...and not allow her friendship with her neighbor, Henry Byler, to grow into anything more.

Publisher's Description

Sarah Yoder is learning to help the people in her Amish community as a Dokterfraa, creating teas and tinctures from the herbs she grows. But her latest patient seems to have a problem that can't be resolved with Sarah's remedies-a woman who, in Sarah's mind, would flourish anywhere other than where she lives. Meanwhile, as Sarah's relatives attempt a little matchmaking between her and a visiting Amish man, she struggles to let God show her His choice of partner and not allow her friendship with her neighbor, Henry Byler, to grow into anything more.

Henry has seen some success as a potter since a major store commissioned his work for their catalog. But the trouble is they want to market him as Amish. Though he was raised in the faith and lives in Amish country, Henry has never joined church and doesn't plan to. Which also means, despite the attraction between them, he must keep his distance from Sarah. But what will happen when Sarah and Henry are called upon to help a runaway whose Englisch family is blind to how lost their son has become? The plant Sarah calls Keys of Heaven can grow in impossible places, but it's hard for people to find their own place, which creates quite a temptation for Sarah to take matters into her own hands...

Editorial Reviews

"Senft is a talented author and her research on various herbs is a welcome surprise to readers....This sweet romance has a believable storyline and a lot of heart."—RT Book Reviews on Herb of Grace
"[A] genuine must read for those who love Amish fiction. Readers will not be able to put this book down until finished, it is just that great and filled with rich characterization.... HERB OF GRACE is a five star recommended book."—AmishReader.blogspot.com on Herb of Grace
"With a complex mix of both younger and older characters and a complex story line, this book is truly a success."—Brodart Books & Library Services on Herb of Grace
"I do declare that Adina has saved the best story for last. I loved this book! Saying that it is a heartfelt story just doesn't seem like it does the book justice."—Destination Amish on The Tempted Soul
"With this quaint, gentle read, Senft's promising series is off to a good start and will make a nice alternative for Jerry S. Eicher readers who want to try a new author."—Library Journal on The Wounded Heart
"This relatable story, which launches Senft's Amish Quilt series, shows that while waiting to see God's plan can be difficult, remembering to put Jesus first, others next and yourself last ("JOY") is necessary."—Romantic Times on The Wounded Heart
"Senft perfectly captures the Amish setting of the novel, causing me both to long for the simplicity and beauty of the Amish way, but also to ponder with puzzlement some of the decisions made by the Ordnung. Amelia is an endearing character, and there were a few laugh-out-loud moments for me that I wasn't even expecting. Although this is the first book I have read by the author, she has been added to my "must read" list. If you are a fan of Amish fiction, then plan on reading The Wounded Heart soon!"—Christian Fiction Addiction on The Wounded Heart
"I absolutely loved The Hidden Life! Nothing is as enjoyable as feeling the same way the characters do throughout the story and believing that you are mixed into the same world....The Hidden Life is full of conflict, romance, and drama! Overall I felt Adina captured the Amish way of life with fine detail. Be prepared to become an even bigger fan of Adina's after you read this book and you will be eagerly anticipating the next installment The Tempted Soul just like me!"

Keys of Heaven: A Healing Grace Novel, By: Adina Senft

A good read on a beautiful Sunday. A story that has lots of things going on. People that are interesting. Never a dull moment. I still consider Adina a new author to me. This is only the third book that I have read by her. I am looking forward to reading more books by Adina. Be sure to check out her website and Facebook pages.

The second book in A Healing Grace series and, while you could read this one as a standalone, there are some plot threads that will make more sense if you've read the first book, Herb of Grace. Like the gnashing-of-teeth and stomping-of-feet romantic thread...and that's all I'm sayin' 'bout that...except I'm yearning for book three in the worst way now.

Sarah is back working with her healing herbs. She's getting more comfortable being a Dokterfraa -- maybe too comfortable as she presses for what she feels is best for her patients...and her friends. There's lots of Amish community shenanigans to keep things hopping and a troubled Englisch boy to make things even more interesting. And then there's this not to be spoken of connection between Sarah and Henry. Impossible. Improbable. Insert a heartbreaking sob here.

Like most continuous type series, this middle book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. We still need to rally around the Yoder family and light a fire under Henry and hopefully smooth out poor neighbour Priscilla's love life (unless she gets her own book later on.) Not to mention sister-in-law Amanda. Sarah's on the look out for the perfect suitor. I am definitely looking forward to more of this heroine's well-intentioned meddling and the complications that will ensue when book three, Balm of Gilead comes out this summer.

Chamomile tea is one of my stress and anxiety relievers. I enjoyed reading of Sarah and the herbal teas and tinctures she creates to help the Amish community and her own family. I learned a great deal about some new natural remedies that I did not know about previously. As a retired teacher and lover of crafts and arts, I read with interest as the young English teenager, Eric, explored his desire to create pottery with Henry, who is formerly Amish and does not intend to return to the Amish faith.

There were a great many relationships and storylines going on in this book and a few times, I had to backtrack and reread portions of the book to figure out who was being featured at a given time. Within these relationships, there were many romances and conflicts occurring and it kept me hopping to keep up. I really enjoyed the book though and appreciate the number of lessons learned by several of the characters. There were several lessons of faith learned as characters experienced turmoils and trials of life.

I rate this book 4 stars and highly recommend it to readers. I think this book would also be of particular interest to teenagers, even preteens would find it enjoyable.

I received a copy of this book from netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

The story of the small community of Amish people and characters from Herb of Grace continue in Keys of Heaven, book two in the Healing Grace series. The third novel is due out this summer sometime, and I plan on reading and enjoying a copy. In both books, we learn about herbs that are used medicinally and easily obtained by Sarah Yoder on various farms or woods. Henry is an artist who gains inspiration for his pottery works from the world he views and studies around him in the same community as Sarah. However Sarah feels about Henry, she cannot have anything but a friendship because Henry is not Amish though he was raised in the faith and same community.

Readers will be able to identify with the mothers heart as clearly shown in Sarahs actions and other female characters in her family and community. Now, she is studying alongside a well-grounded and long-practicing herbalist as the community is growing and needing a person close by to treat those in need. Just as in Herbs of Grace readers will appreciate the issues all humans may have to deal with in their lives, making the characters easily believable in word and deed.

Sometimes I think many of us could learn how to come together and help others whether in normal day-to-day living or in times of trouble. I was glad to see a third book coming out in the summer titled, Balm of Gilead, as I want to continue reading to see how some of the unfinished threads in the series might be tied together. Dont miss the first book, Herb of Grace, followed by Keys of Heaven for fantastic and pleasurable reading!

Something is beginning to brew, is it romance or just one of Sarah Yoder's herbal teas?

I've heard it said, that most people will grow if they are cultivated in a place where love, security and faith abounds. But what some might believe is that people can also grow among the rocks and places where soil is so thin, you would think they simply won't last long. Keys of Heaven by author Adina Senft, the second novel in the Healing Grace Series, explores that theme in a variety of situations involving both Amish and English living together in a small Amish Community.

Sarah Yoder is exploring her knowledge as an herbalist in finding cures where God's plants and weeds grow, turning them into useful lotions, remedies, teas and tinctures for whatever ails the person she is giving it to. Sarah is coming to terms with her brother and son leaving to join a cattle ranch while saying they were exploring their options. It has lead to a division not only in the community but in the family as well. She is praying that they will return soon and until that time will continue to resume training in helping her own people with natural cures.

Henry Byler has landed one of the biggest contracts he ever hoped for as a small time potter. They want to carry his line of bowls and pottery both in their New York stores and also online as well. The one thing Henry didn't consider was they were marketing this product as Amish made but Henry may have grown up Amish but he had made a decision to not follow in their footsteps nor does he want to join the church. That has put him at odds with some in his community and none more so than Sarah whose property adjoins Henry's.

When a wealthy family vacation at the Rose Arbor Inn, things are about to get interesting, from the oldest son, showing an interest in an Amish girl who works there as a maid, to the youngest one who has artistic passions he can't share with his family but finds hope in confiding in Henry. He dreams of one day being a great artist like Henry but hides all his passions from his parents. He believes Eric has the talent and only needs someone could encourage him. Is Henry the right person for the job?

I received Keys of Heaven of Adina Senft compliments of Faith Words, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are strictly my own. This is such a beautiful blending of two very different cultures, the Amish and English as they try to find ways to settle any differences that come between them. It shows how we can often jump to conclusions that we might think are best for someone when in the end, we are simply overstepping God's plan for someone instead. It shows what the reward is for honest, hard work, and faith in small things and I can't wait to read the third novel coming out Balm of Gilead in the summer of 2015. A sneak peek of Balm of Gilead is included at the conclusion as well as a Reading Group Guide. I love how Sarah finds healing in what is growing around the land and I've loved learning about natural remedies through this series. It is well worth 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.
