Product Description

In 1772 England, Lady Keturah Banning Tomlinson and her sisters find themselves the heiresses of their father's estates and know they have one option: Go to the West Indies to save what is left of their heritage.

Although it flies against all the conventions for women of the time, they're determined to make their own way in the world. But once they arrive in the Caribbean, proper gender roles are the least of their concerns. On the infamous island of Nevis, the sisters discover the legacy of the legendary sugar barons has vastly declined--and that's just the start of what their eyes are opened to in this unfamiliar world.

Keturah never intends to put herself at the mercy of a man again, but every man on the island seems to be trying to win her hand and, with it, the ownership of her plantation. She could desperately use an ally, but even an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend leaves her questioning his motives.

Set on keeping her family together and saving her father's plantation, can Keturah ever surrender her stubbornness and guarded heart to God and find the healing and love awaiting her?

Amazing? Awesome? Wonderful? These words can't even begin to describe what I thought of Lisa T. Bergren's newest novel. I always say that her books can't get better than the last one. And then it does. Every. Single. Time.

I'm not much of a writer so to try and explain what I loved so much about this book is difficult. Is it the strong independent heroine? The oh so charming, yet genuine, man who tries to woo her heart? The plot with adventure at the turn of every page? Maybe it's all those things, and more, combined. After all, in my opinion, a great book isn't one that you can list a favorite thing about it. It's one that you can't stop listing your favorite things!

If the next few books in this series are as seriously addicting as this onewell there's no use trying to find a cure for me. Because I don't want one!

Lisa T. Bergren is one of my favorite authors so of course, I had to read her newest release, Keturah. I was captivated from the very first page. Readers will find a story about an independent woman and her sisters traveling across the Atlantic from England to the West Indies with the intent of running a sugarcane plantation alone.

The sisters find themselves surprised as they learn what the island is truly like. They were surrounded by slavery in England, but the slaves were treated as family. They were quite sheltered from it all, so when they come to Nevis theyre in for a shock.

God shines throughout the pages even though this does deal with somewhat heavy topics such as slavery and abuse. Keturah had been abused both physically and emotionally by her late husband. The author doesnt share any graphic detail, especially since the abuse happened long before the story takes place. However, readers do watch the inner battles of one who has been abused. The author handles the topic with grace, love, and hope.

Overall, I quite enjoyed being transported back in time to a setting that Ive never read about before. Highly recommended!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

    "Crop blight . . . Terrible drought . . . . Machinery failure . . . . Another overseer lost to the ague . . . Returns far less than the last . . .

Dire last words from a father to his three daughters; making Lady Keturah Banning Tomlinson all the more determined to take the future of her two younger sisters along with her to the West Indies where they must turn their fledgling island fortunes aright. It was practically scandalous among polite society for three gentlewomen to board a ship unaccompanied, so when Keturah's childhood friend, Gray Covington, providentially plans to travel on the same ship, Keturah can't decide whether to be happy or childishly provoked. After all, Gray deserted their long standing friendship when she needed him the most.

Gray Covington is certain that Keturah has grown up into a beauty all her own. After enduring what he assumed to be a terrible marriage, before being widowed, Keturah makes it crystal clear that she never wants to be beholden to a man again. If only she would make an exception, for what she is about to face on the island of Nevis is going to test her independence to unfathomable limits.

"Keturah" is quite the wonder, spilling over with lush descriptive scenery, only to be interrupted with the harsh realities of island proprietorship as a single woman. The fragrance of romance is a gift from author to reader, especially with nuggets of truth such as this, "All God expects of us is to do our best, from morning to night. He doesn't expect us to do things that only He can accomplish . . . "

    Well said, Gray Covington!

Keturah is another great story by Lisa Tawn Bergren! I have read many of Lisa's books and this one is another excellent one. The story is of three sisters that travel outside their comfort zone and outside the culture norm to run their deceased father's sugar plantation. In this era, women would not have embarked on this kind of journey and definitely not by themselves. The three sisters leave by ship to an island where this plantation is at. They are all alone on the ship except for one gentleman that is also heading out to the island to start his own plantation.

The story deals with the struggles that the sisters have while on the boat and when they arrive on the island. All the odds are against them, yet they strive forward. I love the courage that is shown among the sisters. Because they have each other, they are stronger. While this book deals with many hard struggles in life, I really enjoyed the story of love between sisters, neighbors, and friends, the courage shown in difficult situations, and the faith to overcome the struggles that were before them. I can't wait to read the next two books in the Sugar Baron's Daughters series! I am looking forward to more great stories by Lisa Tawn Bergren!

In her new series debut, Lisa T. Bergren introduces readers to the sugar plantations of Indiesspecifically the island of Nevis. Fair warning, reading this book just might make you long for a Caribbean vacation to experience the islands yourself.

Keturah is bound and determined (some call it tenacity, others call it stubbornness) to save her familys plantation. In the process, she longs to prove her strengthboth to herself and to others.

Bergren delves into the difficult and ugly realities of the time and placeslavery and abusewhile handling them with care, a delicate balance between the necessities of the time and the different treatment shown to others.

Amidst the challenges and dark sides of life on Nevis is the promise of second chances. In Keturahs world, those abounda second chance at life, at love, and to become the woman she longs to be.

Get swept away in the story of Keturah and her sisters as they leave their home in England, travel the seas, and discover the beauty and dangersboth seen and hiddenof life on-island. An epic read that already has me wanting more of the Banning sisters.
