Emily Conrad's debut, Justice, is an emotionally rich, page-turning look into a young couple's lives as they deal with a traumatic incident and their budding relationship. The story beautifully paints the struggle humans have trusting God amidst trials and believing He'll execute justice so that we don't have to.

Coffee shop owner/youth group pastor Jake and his best friend/long-time crush, Brooklyn, must work through not only Brooklyn's rape but also the aftermath--an unexpected pregnancy. They both know that in their small town, the waves of gossip could drown them. Jake has always loved Brook, and as he struggles to help her he also comes against attacks to his business. Finally sharing her secret helps Brook process what happened, but the guilt and shame cause her to question God's goodness, her faith, and her relationship with Jake.

The story is told in alternating points of view, and I felt Jake's was especially strong. The author weaves a bold faith thread that helped buoy the characters and will the reader, as they experience the joy and heartache that Jake and Brooklyn do. Beautifully shown also, is the influence of gossip and judgement in the church, and how harmful it is to everyone involved.

Justice tackles difficult issues with grace and lovely, flowing prose. The author is a gifted wordsmith, and the faith element is powerful and well-done. I loved the reminder that God works all things for our good, even terrible trials we can't understand in the moment.

I highly recommend Justice to fans of Inspirational women's fiction. 4.5 stars, and I'm eager to read more from this talented author/storyteller.

Youth pastor/coffee shop owner Jake has a few lessons to learn about vengeance and trusting God's plan when his BFF/forever crush, Brooklyn, turns up unexpectedly expecting. We went on quite the roller coaster with Jake as he struggled with his feelings for Brooklyn, his desire to help her, and drive for revenge for several completely understandable reasons. I really felt for him, as I know the helpless frustration that comes from wanting nothing more than to fix a problem for someone I love, and not being able to lift a finger to do so.

I always appreciate Christian fiction that's bold enough to deal with difficult issues, and this one definitely fit that bill. Brooklyn's pregnancy results from a sexual assault, and the emotions this raises in the characters are very real. Jesus never shied away from the ugliness of life, so I'm always grateful when authors follow his lead and bring God's light into some of the darkest evil the world flings at us.

For me (and I want to stress those first two words) sometimes the spiritual lessons felt a bit heavy-handed, but again that's a matter of personal preference. Overall, the book was beautifully written. If you're interested in a story of forgiveness, redemption, healing, and all things--even some of the worst things--working together for good, then I think you'll like Justice.

Emily Conrad is a rare gem of a writer. In JUSTICE, she's able to craft a story that is at once entertaining, heartwarming, and romantic, but also offers an honest, authentic look at real life in the real world. With prose that hints of literary style and thematic depth to match, this tale is rich, nuanced, and unexpected. Best of all, this story shines the hope of God on difficult circumstances.

JUSTICE deals with a past sexual assault and the repercussions of that, so some of the story is necessarily dark. But the author threads hope and healing into every step of the heroine's journey which balances the weightiness of the topic for readers. Emily Conrad has a way of taking me places I may not want to go, but in the end, I'm so glad I went because I am uplifted and changed for the better.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that JUSTICE is about so much more than a woman's recovery from assault. In fact, that's not the real center of this story at all. The heart of this vibrant tale is a struggle we can all relate to--Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does it seem that injustice prevails? Through the hero's and heroine's journeys, Emily Conrad throws away the easy answers and fabricated excuses to reveal the truth about God's role in suffering and apparent injustice.

The sweet result is redemption, hope, and a beautiful romance like you've never read before and will never forget!
