Diane5 Stars Out Of 5Best New Devos for PreteensDecember 22, 2014DianeDare U 2 Open This Book and Just Sayin' are two new devos--one for boys, one for girls-guaranteed to convince tweens that learning to follow Jesus is never boring!
These are active, engaging devotions, each based on a Scripture verse or short passagebut no two are ever alike! Pages are low on text, high on graphics and illustrations.
These devotions are high on Scripture exploration and application too. Here's an example from Dare U 2 Open This Book: The pages show Matthew 13:44 and a blank treasure map. The prompt is What if you drew a treasure map to help a friend find God? Tweens learn more about themselves as they learn more about Godand its always fun! Each devotion challenges them to think, to considerand then to doodle, write, take quizzes, solve puzzles, glue, paintright in the book!
Author Carol McAdams Moore is a teacher who gets kidsall kidsand knows how to communicate in their language. Heres an example from Just Sayin' (the book for girls):
Covet means wanting something that is not yours. Its just plain jelly. Dont. Do. That. K?
And heres one of the accompanying doodle prompts:
Doodle all the ways your eyes look when you really, really wish you had someone elses stuff.
If you are buying gifts for tweens this Christmas, I cant recommend these books highly enough!
Momof3North CarolinaAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Just Sayin' by Carol McAdams MooreOctober 27, 2014Momof3North CarolinaAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Don't judge this book by its cover. This paperback, 90-day devotion book is perfect for daughters (ages 8-12)who love digging & doodling. Each two-page devotional contains a scripture (NIV or NLT) and questions to get your girls pondering. Best of all, they'll love the opportunities to put their thoughts into pictures, puzzles, quizzes, and more.
One example is from Psalm 95. After some reflection on the scripture, you draw inside a frame of hearts a time you had a hardened heart and another space is for how you look living out life with a soft heart.
In addition to the topics and the various "doodle" acitivites; the terminology in the book will also appeal to girls 8-12. (ex. "peeps"= friends)
I wasn't sure I'd like this book based on the cover (maybe I just don't care for dogs in sunglasses) but I do like this book! It has Truth and the fun factor. It will appeal to all types, but especially to those with short attention spans or those who do not enjoy a lot of reading. Devos are short, substantial, and snazzy.

But, the other day Zonderkidz sent me two books for children 8 to 12 years old which I love and am very happy to let you know about! Dare U 2 Open This Book is a unique devotional for guys and Just Sayin' is for girls - if you are looking for a devotional which you can recommend to the families in your ministry; definitely take a look at these two books! Let's take a closer look at both of them . . .

Each devotion includes a topic, Scripture to read, devotional thoughts to consider, questions to ponder and space to doodle what it means to you, what it causes you to think about, how you might live it, etc.
Zonderkidz says, these aren't "your typical 90-day devotionals. They are an all-out open space for you to explore and learn more about yourself and your faith. I totally agree! As a grandma, I look for books which my grandsons will want to spend time with to help them get into God's Word . . . Dare U 2 Open This Book is a book which I believe will do this! While my Josiah is only six, he reads like crazy, has a great vocabulary and does a lot of serious thinking; Dare U 2 Open This Book will be under the Christmas tree for him this year! I love how the devotions are short - just the right length to engage an elementary-age boy or girl. I love how the questions are focused to encourage children to really think about what God's Word says and how it lives in their lives. And, the space to doodle is not only fun, but an excellent way to help children think about and express what they are learning and thinking! These are devotionals which will be read, doodled in and which will impact the lives of boys and girls!
