Publisher's Description

Wouldn't it be marvelous if mothering came with a concrete set of instructions—an easy recipe we could follow? Instead, motherhood challenges women to find their faith, their true selves, and their family through daily doses of trial and error. It is a brilliant and healing time of life that is full of joy, pain, and beauty with a small side of crisis (and humor). What mothers do not know, they learn. And through this lifelong process of learning, they nurture and care for the most precious gifts on earth: children.

In a modern society where moms often have a full and busy plate, these 10 minute daily devotions focus on six key topics of motherhood:
•    Self-acceptance
•    Self-care
•    Reconciling with grief, hope and expectations
•    Generosity
•    Presence
•    Forgiveness

In addition to the devotions, these beautiful pages are adorned with handmade illustrations to help you refresh from long days or even occasional sleepless nights. So, grab your colors and a little quiet time for yourself while doodling at the kitchen table. You will be grateful you did!

In 40 Days To A Joyful Motherhood, six topics relating to motherhood are covered. There are 40 devotions with a coloring page included for each day. I think the author chose encouraging verses to use with each devotion. I like the simplicity of the coloring pages, there is not a lot of detail in them that will take a long time to fill in. I was disappointed to see new-age wording in the devotions. Also there is too much self-care, self-time, self-whatever discussed for my liking. These last two items caused me not to get a lot out of the actual devotions. Although now that I am done reading through this book in its entirety for review purposes, I will take my time to color each doodle page and focus on the Biblical scripture that is given for each day. I was provided a complimentary review copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I've done some of the mandala coloring pages, but have never had my own coloring book. This 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is an excellent book- in that you can search your soul and calm your mind just getting away with God in prayer and coloring. The devotions themselves aren't long; however, each devotional has a coloring page. It would definitely take several settings to complete if you are a mom that is in great demand. The coloring might even have to be a project for nap time or quite mommy minutes. However, they aren't too overwhelmingly detailed. Some have some have scripture verses others are just pictures.

The devotionals are on the modern, new-age side and geared for mommies that is for sure. How can you go wrong with meditating on God's Word and spending time relaxing and coloring.

I was even more overjoyed when I found that Christian publishers were putting together coloring books. I liked the inspiring quotes and coordinating pictures to color much better than some of the psychedelic offerings at the big box stores. So I was not surprised when a combination coloring book/devotion book came along. Sarah Humphrey has written 40 encouraging devotions about topics dear to mothers' hearts: self-care, self-acceptance, generosity, forgiveness, and the challenges of family life. Coupled with each devotion is a simple prayer and a full page image to color. Some of the images include scripture or inspiring quotes, but not all do. Many of the images are quite simple and will not require much time to color. Other pages offer space for simple journaling as well as coloring. I like to imagine a mother taking the time to read the devotion, then taking a few minutes to contemplate the devotion as she colors. We really do process better when we are relaxed and coloring is supposed to enhance relaxation, so it makes sense to couple coloring with reflections about a daily devotion, then ending the brief quiet time with a simple prayer. And we all know that mothers, if they ever get quiet time, have only a few moments of it!!

I received a copy of this devotional coloring book from Litfuse. This review reflects my personal opinions.

40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood by Sarah Humphrey is the first coloring devotional I've done that focuses specifically on motherhood. The devotional section doesn't take long probably five minutes or so to read, pray and respond so I do it in the morning. The coloring pages take longer and give me something to look forward to doing after the littles are in bed for the night.

The devotionals are split into eight sections, each one containing five teachings. I found that some of the devotional thoughts were a combination of Biblical teaching and a sort of positive psychology or theory. I know that sounds odd, but I'm not sure how else to describe it. For example, in the first section, the author placed a heavy emphasis on name meanings as relating to a person's identity. I found it difficult to buy the concept that the meaning of my child's name is indicative of their strengths or potential struggles. I know that Biblical people often had names with special meanings, but I just wasn't convinced on this particular concept.

Some of the coloring portions are simple and some are complex. I prefer the simpler ones because I don't have a lot of extra time and can finish them without staying up overly late. Additionally, adding some outlining or coloring the background are possibilities to extend the coloring time if I want to. On some of the more complex pages, I had to leave a portion uncolored and return to it at a later time. In general, the illustrations were whimsical and reflected the devotion's theme well.

In conclusion, 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood by Sarah Humphrey was enjoyable to read and color. I wasn't on board with everything Humphrey said in the devotions, but I still liked it overall.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Coloring books are so popular right now, so I was interested when I saw that there was a coloring book and devotional together. 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is a coloring book and a devotional focused on Mom. This book helps moms to focus on joy in all the ups and downs that life and parenthood sends our way. The devotionals are short and to the point, with a lot of truth, great lessons, reminders, and ideas packed into them. There is a Bible verse and a short simple prayer that accompanies each devotional. What makes this unique is that there is a coloring page that follows. These are very simple pages to color, which I like as I dont have a lot of time to sit and make a masterpiece. Just little simple reminders for Moms and also an opportunity to let a bit of creativity show through that would make a nice gift for any Mom in any stage of motherhood. Even Grandmas, as my own mother enjoys coloring.

I received this book free of charge through Litfuse. I was not required to give a favorable review and all views expressed are my own.
