Product Description

This book celebrates the distinguished life and ministry of Marion Josiah Hatchett, whose writings have instructed more than a generation of parish clergy. Professor Hatchett has taught at the School of Theology of the University of the South for thirty years. In classroom lectures, liturgies practica, music rehearsals, rota groups, advanced degree seminars, and tutorials, his students have encountered a man who is passionate about his subject, faithful to the tradition, in love with the church, and genuinely devoted to them--the future deacons, presbyters, and bishops of the Episcopal Church. Dr. Hatchett's influence is such that even readers unfamiliar with his work will discover in this festschrift a rich collection of scholarship and discussion on areas of interest and concern as the Episcopal Church looks to the next millennium. The writers of the volume, all familiar with Dr. Hatchett's work, have contributed essays--academic, pastoral, or reflective--to create a tribute to a colleague of great wisdom and influence. One group of essays centers on Christian initiation, another on hymnology. Essays on aspects of the American Prayer Book tradition, liturgical evangelism, preaching, and sacramental theology broaden the scope of the volume. Edited by J. Neil Alexander, Professor at the School of Theology at the University of the South, this collection will give the reader a sense of the breadth of Dr. Hatchett's scholarship and influence.
