A Heavenly Visit
August 13, 2014
He makes a pretty good effort trying to tell you what he saw and who saw. He does tell what the people he saw had meant to him, so it does give you some anticipation on who you might see when it is your time. I also like the fact that he did NOT spend almost all of the book writing his complete autobiography and almost nothing about heaven.
He also says that he did not want to tell his story and why that was the case. I thought the events that led him to open up about his story was interesting.
Marvin J. Besteman and Lorilee Craker in their new book, "My Journey to Heaven" published by Revell gives us Mr. Besteman's account of seeing Heaven, "What I Saw and How It Changed My Life".
From the Back Cover: An unforgettable trip to the gates of heaven and back
As Marv Besteman lay in a hospital bed, visions of celestial beauty were the last thing on his mind. He had just had surgery to remove a rare pancreatic tumor. Alone after visiting hours ended, Marv tossed and turned, wanting more than anything else to simply sleep and escape the excruciating pain and misery for a while.
He was about to have an experience he never could have imagined-and could never forget.
In My Journey to Heaven, Marv Besteman shares the true story of his experience of heaven with astounding detail. You'll meet the angels who accompanied him to the gate, overhear his conversation with St. Peter, and feel the joy as he recognizes friends and family members who touched his life.
If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, or even if you just wonder about what happens after we die, you'll find peace, comfort, and encouragement in Marv's story.
There are individuals who believe that Heaven is not a real place that no one is going to when they die. There are others that believe that everyone is going to Heaven when they die. Marvin J. Besteman was there. He saw it. God sent him back to Earth so that he could talk about his experience and then we would know the truth about Heaven. "My Journey to Heaven" is an eye-opening experience. Mr. Besteman saw angels. He saw Peter. He saw the Heavenly Gates. And he saw the Lamb's Book of Life. If your name is not written there then you are not getting into Heaven. But Mr. Besteman tells us how we can get our name written on to the Book so there is no need to panic. Mr. Besteman is like a tour guide telling us only about what he saw. There is more to Heaven, he tells us that, it is just that he didn't get to see it all while he was there. "My Journey to Heaven" is a book that you will want to give to family and friends and, especially to anyone searching for answers to what happens when we die. Mr. Besteman's story is an important story to share with people grieving the loss of a loved one. "My Journey to Heaven" is a reminder that this world is not the end of our journey, but that it is continued in Heaven, a place of peace and healing and a reuniting with those we love! I highly recommend this book

In My Journey to Heaven, Marvin Besteman describes his visit to Heaven in 2006. He describes in detail what he saw and experienced there, as well as the people he saw and recognized.
Normally, I describe the plot of a book without worrying about having to issue "spoiler alerts", but in this case, I don't really see a way to talk about this book in detail without just retelling his story. So, it comes down to this: some people will believe this book, and others won't. I admit that it challenged my thinking regarding Heaven. Everything he described wasn't exactly the way I've always understood the Bible to mean. However, I tried to keep an open mind while reading. Without giving away too much detail, the one point where I felt that this could be on target was when he described what he saw before the Throne of God. It wasn't the type of thing that a man of his generation and theological background would probably imagine.
Whether or not he described Heaven accurately, I feel that he sincerely believed that he saw Heaven, and that it looked just the way he described. This could be very comforting for someone who has lost a loved one. It may not be for everyone, but for anyone who will keep an open mind while reading, it is a wonderful reminder that Heaven is certainly real.

I found this book a compelling read...who doesn't want to know what Heaven is like. We have all heard that those who go through the light don't want to come back.
Marvin Besteman, a stubborn Dutchman as he calls himself, was just operated on for a pancreatic tumor. He was in such pain the night after the surgery, and all of a sudden he felt himself floating free. No tubes, needles! For months after this experience he doesn't tell anyone.
The first person is his wife Ruth, and when she asked him if he had thought of her, he told her no. Was she disappointed? I think what happened was it was all so wonderful, that he didn't have time to think of anyone. What he describes is so very very wonderful, no wonder he didn't want to return.
I have recently lost my Husband, this book really touched my heart, and gave me a lot of peace. Marvin describes in detail the babies...lots and lots of them. In all stages of development from a few week old fetus to a full term. I have also lost a 77 day old infant, and to hear that they were all happy and laying on grass ...softer than any blanket. He said he didn't see anyone taking care of them, but knew some how they were all fine.
The colors he describes, the gates, the stone walls, and the throne. I could see it all through his eyes.
I will pass this book on for others to read, and I'm so glad I was given this opportunity to absorb all that is presented.
Of course I wanted more, and would have loved to sit down and speak personally with Marvin, but now it can never by. He did leave again and Saint Peter opened the gate earlier this year.

Inspiring, humorous, and thought-provoking, My Journey to Heaven should definitely be on your "must read" list this year! Marvin's trip to heaven is recounted in wonderful detail, and I greatly enjoyed the style in which this book is written. Besteman is not a man who takes himself too seriously, and the result is a lighthearted book that deals with a deep subject matter - the reality of heaven, and the fantastic experience that awaits us at the end of our lives. I loved how he incorporated so much scripture into his story, and the fact that God chose a more conservative type of individual to have the experience Marvin had seems to lend even greater credibility to what happened. I also loved how he pointed people back to Jesus, offering the assurance of salvation through faith in Christ, an assurance that we too can enjoy heaven and the wonder that it holds.
This book is one that I will be recommending to family, friends, and anyone searching for answers to what happens when we die. Marvin's story would be an especially important one to share with people grieving the loss of a loved one, a reminder that this world is not the end of our journey, but that it is continued in Heaven, a place of peace and healing and a reunification with those we love! I highly recommend this book and award it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
