Product Description

The standard work on phonics, Why Johnny Can't Read opened a flood of criticism toward the popular " look-and-say" method which has produced mixed results. With eye-witness accounts by the author who spent time in classrooms where both methods were used, he documents the results from classrooms K-12, with astonishingly strong results for the phonics method of instruction. Recommended by the U.S. Department of Education, it comes with complete instructions and materials for teaching children at home, including phonetic lists and charts of letters. Originally written in 1911, prices and some terminology are outdated, but the general principles are not. A strong emphasis on parents teaching their own children is also infused throughout. 256 pages, softcover.

This is a very old book, it was originally published in the 1950'ds. It pretty much breaks down the basics of phonics in an easy way and gives rationale for it. I wish I would have been given this books in college, it would have made all of the difference in my teaching. I was taught the "whole language" reading method in college. In my opinion a bunch of cutsy activities, memorizing words and reading boring basils. That was what many teachers probably learned a long time ago. It took me many years of teaching and experimenting on my own to finally learn phonics since it was never taught to me.

If you are a home school parent that wants to teach their child how to read or you want to supplement your child's education. Buy this book and I recommend using Saxon phonics, the kindergarten and first grade editions.
