Product Description

Though two of the shortest books in the Bible, Joel and Obadiah are treasures rich in themes, imagery, and poetry. Both Joel and Obadiah emphasize judgement and the redemption of societal misconduct. In this commentary, Barton discusses questions of historical background and literary architecture and unpacks the theological significance of the text--both historical and contemporary--of these prophets.

This commentary is the best advanced commentary on Joel and Obadiah. It give a lot of detail and is pretty academic. This of course is a good thing. If you are studying one of these books you should have this commentary in your library. It will not find another commentary from an evangelical perspective that will be this broad providing both a commentary like treatment as well as treating more advanced issues. I would recommend this volume especially with this 4.99 price tag!!! Most of the commentaries in this series (OTL) are much more expensive. Get this book if you are studying Joel and Obadiah! Don't expect this book to be devotional or to walk you though these books with colorful stories and cute antidotes. It is academic and gets straight to the point. Truly a good commentary series, not for beginners so to speak.

This is a solid academic look at these two OT books. It is neither expository or devotional. Those looking for those elements in a commentary ought to look elsewhere. But for the seminary student or pastor looking for in depth discussions of the social background behind these books (which he or she can translate to his/her listeners) this is an excellent choice, as are most of the Old Testament Library series
